Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a yellow border remains after you stop recording, first stop and close the capture app, then check whether another recorder or overlay is still running. Windows uses a yellow outline to mark content during some screen-capture sessions, but a border that persists afterward may be tied to a still-active app, an overlay, or a capture-tool issue. The right fix depends on which app is involved.
Why Windows shows a yellow screen border
Windows Graphics Capture can add a yellow border to the content being captured so you can tell what is being shared or recorded. Microsoft’s Kelly Renner described the indicator in a September 16, 2019 Windows Developer Blog post: “Once the capture is initiated, the visual being captured is enhanced with a small yellow border to remind the user of what is being shared and/or possibly recorded.” The Windows Graphics Capture APIs shipped with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, version 1803.
If the border disappears when capture ends, it was likely the expected indicator. If it remains, color and shape alone cannot establish that recording is still active: an app or overlay may be drawing it, or a capture session may not have closed cleanly.
Try these fixes in order
-
Stop capture and close the apps that may be using it
Stop the recording or screen share, then exit the recorder or capture utility rather than leaving it open. Check the system tray and Task Manager for another capture app that could still be running. Microsoft Q&A contributors suggest checking tools such as Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, OBS, Zoom, Teams, and AnyDesk. This is community guidance, not an official Microsoft diagnostic checklist.

Check for a separate overlay
Look for apps that draw their own on-screen indicators, even when a recording has stopped. In a Windows 11 Microsoft Q&A thread, a respondent reported that quitting PowerToys from the system tray removed the border and mentioned ZoomIt as another possible trigger. Treat these as leads to check, not universal causes or fixes. See the reported Windows 11 case.
-
Check Windows 11 screenshot-border controls for OBS
If OBS is involved, open Settings > Privacy and security > Screenshot borders in Windows 11 and inspect the per-app Let apps turn off the screenshot border control. An OBS issue opened November 17, 2025 describes a Studio Mode case in which a yellow outline remained after a source was hidden, while the outline disappeared outside Studio Mode. This is a mode-specific report, not proof that the same setting or behavior explains every OBS border. Review the OBS issue.

Check Graphics capture settings for Medal
If you use Medal Advanced Window Capture, Medal’s support page points to Settings > Privacy & security > Graphics capture and the Let apps turn off the screenshot border option. Medal says this setting is available only in Windows 11. Its support page also says the border does not appear in Medal’s final clips or full-session recordings; that statement applies to Medal, not other recorders. See Medal’s instructions.
-
Restart Windows Explorer if Snipping Tool was involved
If closing Snipping Tool did not clear the border, one Microsoft Q&A respondent reported clearing it by restarting Windows Explorer from Task Manager. Treat this as a reported workaround, not a guaranteed repair. The report is in the Snip Tool causes Yellow Border thread.

Use the symptoms to narrow down the cause
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| The outline appears only while recording or sharing. | It may be the normal Windows Graphics Capture indicator. | Stop capture and close the app; see whether the outline disappears. |
| The outline remains on the desktop after capture ends. | A capture app or an overlay may still be active, or the capture state may be stuck. | Check the tray, Task Manager, and overlay apps; then try the app-specific steps above. |
| The outline is visible in OBS Studio Mode but not outside it. | This matches the mode-specific behavior reported in the OBS issue; it does not establish the cause on other systems. | Check OBS mode and the Windows 11 Screenshot borders controls. |
| The outline appears on the live desktop but not in a Medal clip or full-session recording. | Medal says its own border is not included in those saved recordings. | Check Medal’s capture settings and Windows 11 Graphics capture controls. |
| You cannot tell whether the outline is in the recording. | The saved footage can help distinguish a desktop indicator from an overlay included by the recorder. | Review a short saved clip, if available, and note which recorder and capture mode produced it. |
If the yellow border still will not go away
Note your Windows version, the recorder or screenshot app, the capture mode, and whether the border appears in saved footage or only on the live desktop. Those details help separate a Windows capture indicator from an app-specific overlay or stuck state. The cited reports do not establish one fix that works across every Windows build and capture tool; if the steps above do not help, use those details when seeking support for the app involved.
