Is baking soda safe for a retainer?
Not necessarily. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) cautions that abrasive particles can scratch a retainer’s surface, and Polident similarly warns that baking soda’s abrasive composition may damage retainers, aligners, or mouth guards. A baking-soda paste is particularly hard to recommend because it puts an abrasive directly against the appliance during brushing.
Advice differs: Delta Dental lists soaking a retainer in water with baking soda as one possible approach, but the available guidance does not establish a universally safe concentration, soaking time, or method for every material. The safer choice is to use gentle routine care and ask the orthodontist who knows your retainer’s material and design before trying baking soda. Do not assume it disinfects a retainer or removes all buildup.
How to clean a removable retainer routinely
- Remove the retainer as your orthodontist instructed.
- Rinse it with lukewarm water. The AAO also describes cool water as suitable.
- Gently brush all surfaces with a dedicated or soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove the soap.
- When you are not wearing it, store it in its case. AAO FAQ guidance recommends a ventilated case and air-drying.
This routine is for removable retainers. A fixed retainer is attached to the teeth, so brush and clean around its wire rather than trying to remove or soak it. Follow your orthodontist’s instructions for your appliance.

Routine cleaning or a deeper clean?

What to avoid—and when to contact your orthodontist
- Hot or boiling water: Heat can warp or distort plastic retainers.
- Abrasive cleaners: They may scratch the surface.
- Bleach and harsh chemicals: AAO cautions against using them on a retainer.
- Forcing a retainer that no longer fits: Stop and contact your orthodontist, especially if it causes pain.
Contact your orthodontist if the retainer no longer fits, feels painful, or remains odorous or discolored despite cleaning.
