If you need a primary work surface, choose a desk such as MICKE; if you have one and want a raised monitor shelf with accessory storage, consider adding YXSTABY. The right fit depends on your available surface, monitor bases and weight, and how you want to organize your setup.
YXSTABY and a desk do different jobs
The useful comparison is not between two desks. IKEA’s YXSTABY monitor stand is an add-on that occupies part of an existing desk surface. A conventional desk provides that surface in the first place. So the choice is between a desk alone and a desk with the YXSTABY stand added.
“A standard IKEA desk” can mean different models and footprints. IKEA’s US desk catalog includes several MICKE and LAGKAPTEN/ALEX configurations, so compare the specific desk you are considering rather than treating the range as one size. IKEA’s US desk catalog
How much space does YXSTABY use?
IKEA UK lists the YXSTABY gaming monitor stand at 98 cm wide, 27 cm deep, and 16 cm high. Its footprint is therefore 98 × 27 cm on your desktop; it does not create extra desk area. Measure the clear surface where you plan to place it, leaving room for anything that must remain in front of or beside it. For a concrete desk comparison, IKEA US lists the white MICKE desk at 55 7/8 × 19 5/8 in and describes a cable-hiding feature. Since the desk is only 19 5/8 inches deep, the stand’s 27 cm depth is a substantial portion of that front-to-back dimension. Check your own usable surface and equipment layout before combining them. Will the stand fit your monitors?
IKEA says the stand is suitable for two 24-inch monitors or one larger monitor, and gives a maximum shelf load of 20 kg. Treat the screen-size language as manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that every larger display will fit: check the combined weight of the monitor or monitors and whether each base fits securely on the shelf. - Measure the width and depth of each monitor base, not only the screen diagonal.
- Check that the bases sit fully on the shelf and that the total supported weight stays within IKEA’s 20 kg maximum.
- Allow space for the stand itself and for cables or peripherals that need access behind or around it.
What organization does each option offer?
YXSTABY has cable management and holders intended for a headset, controller, phone, and other items. IKEA also says the raised monitors leave room underneath for a laptop, keyboard, or accessories. That can make the desktop more organized, but the stand’s storage and holders do not replace a larger desk surface.
MICKE’s listing describes a cable-hiding feature, while IKEA says desks in the MICKE series can be combined with other desks or drawer units. Which setup makes sense for you?
- You need a desk: start by choosing a desk with enough width, depth, and storage for your work and equipment. YXSTABY cannot serve as the primary work surface.
- You already have a desk and want a raised monitor shelf: consider YXSTABY if its 98 × 27 cm footprint fits and your monitor bases and total load meet IKEA’s guidance.
- You need a different desk footprint: compare named IKEA configurations in your local catalog; dimensions and assortment are not identical across desk models or markets. IKEA’s US desk catalog

The YXSTABY range also includes a gaming laptop support with storage and a gaming side table on casters. IKEA describes the laptop support’s lid as unfolding into a laptop stand, and the side table as offering storage and mobility. Neither is required to use the monitor stand; consider them only if those specific functions suit your setup.
