Patch Zammad by checking the target release notes and dependencies, backing up the installation, and following the upgrade procedure for your deployment type—OS package or Docker Compose. Then secure production access with HTTPS and keep Elasticsearch private or password-protected. Zammad’s August 25, 2026 release page identifies version 7.1.3 as an important security update; check the current release and advisories before you schedule work.
Before you update: identify the deployment and target version
Package and Docker Compose installations have different update and backup procedures. First establish which one you run, then use its matching documentation; package commands and assumptions do not automatically apply to a Compose stack.
- Check the target release notes. Review required extra steps, technical remarks, fixes and breaking changes for the target version. If moving across major versions, read the notes for intermediate major releases too: Zammad says not to skip major versions. Start with Zammad’s updating documentation.
- Confirm dependencies and operating-system support. Check that the host still meets Zammad’s current requirements and that the instructions match your distribution or Compose setup.
- Back up before changing the installation. Use the backup procedure for your deployment type and make sure the resulting backup is available for recovery. Zammad’s host upgrade and repository migration guide also emphasizes backing up before an upgrade.
- Plan a maintenance window. The package procedure requires stopping Zammad before the update. For either deployment type, schedule the change so you can follow its current instructions, check service health afterward and recover from the backup if necessary.
Follow the procedure for your deployment
| Area | OS package installation | Docker Compose |
|---|---|---|
| Update path | Use the distribution-specific package instructions in Zammad’s update guide; stop Zammad and update the package as directed. | Update the Compose deployment using Zammad’s Docker installation guidance and current Compose repository files. |
| Backup and recovery | Use the package-specific backup and restore procedure linked from Zammad’s update documentation. | Use the separate Docker backup and restore procedure linked from Zammad’s Docker documentation. |
| Repository or deployment files | Zammad 7 packages use a new toolchain and repository URL. Follow the distribution-specific steps in the repository migration guide where applicable. | Keep the Compose repository and deployment files current, while preserving your site-specific configuration. |
| Who maintains the surrounding environment | The operator maintains the host OS, package sources and Zammad packages. | The operator maintains the host, containers and Compose stack. Zammad notes that Docker- or Portainer-specific problems are not supported by its Docker guidance. |
Package-specific sequencing
Zammad warns that updating the database server and Zammad together can cause errors if the database is not available again when Zammad’s update runs. Where that sequencing issue applies, update the rest of the host while temporarily excluding Zammad, then update Zammad separately. Use the current instructions for your distribution rather than copying a command intended for a different package manager.
Docker Compose prerequisites
Zammad’s Docker installation documentation specifies at least 4 GB of RAM for the containers and requires vm.max_map_count=262144 for Elasticsearch. Check the current Docker documentation for the applicable setup and update steps; a package installation procedure is not a substitute.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prioritize urgent, version-specific security fixes
Zammad’s 7.1.3 release page, dated August 25, 2026, calls that release an important security update and strongly advises self-hosted installations to upgrade to the latest version immediately. It lists fixes for an SSRF protection bypass through DNS rebinding, unauthorized object disclosure through a Core Workflow endpoint, and cross-tenant attachment disclosure through inline images in notification emails. The page establishes the significance of 7.1.3, not that it remains the newest release on October 4, 2026; check the current release notes and advisory listing before deciding which version to install.
For exposure checks, use the Zammad security advisory archive and current GitHub advisories, comparing the affected-version ranges with the version actually running. For context, advisory ZAA-2026-06 described a critical SQL injection affecting Zammad 6.5.x and listed fixes in 7.0.0 and 6.5.3; that historical example is not a substitute for checking current advisories.

Harden the production web and data paths
Serve the web application over HTTPS
For package deployments, Zammad says its sample plain-HTTP zammad.conf is for local testing only, not production. Follow the SSL configuration for Nginx or Apache in Configure the Webserver. The documented setup covers the certificate, private key, trusted CA certificate, configuration validation and webserver reload; it also describes a Diffie-Hellman parameter file as an HTTPS security improvement.
For an internet-facing Docker Compose deployment, configure HTTPS using a TLS-terminating reverse proxy or Cloudflare Tunnel as described in Zammad’s Docker installation guide. In the relevant reverse-proxy scenario, set NGINX_SERVER_SCHEME=https: Zammad’s own Nginx overwrites X-Forwarded-Proto with the scheme it receives. Without the setting, session cookies may not be written and login can fail with a CSRF token verification error. See the Docker Compose scenarios for the scenario-specific configuration.

Do not expose Elasticsearch without protection
Zammad warns that the Elasticsearch index contains most Zammad data. Do not expose Elasticsearch outside the stack unless the use case requires it; if it must be externally reachable, set ELASTICSEARCH_PASS to a custom value first and follow the relevant scenario instructions.
Check embedding behavior after the 7.1.3 update
Zammad 7.1.3 reintroduced the Content Security Policy directive frame-ancestors 'self'. If your reverse proxy deliberately permits Zammad to load in an iframe on another origin by overriding X-Frame-Options, that change alone may no longer be enough: adjust the CSP directive for the trusted embedding origins as well. See the 7.1.3 release notes before changing the policy.
