Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →FreeScout, osTicket, and Chatwoot are the clearest first alternatives to evaluate—but they solve different problems. FreeScout is oriented around a shared mailbox, osTicket around conventional email and web-form ticketing, and Chatwoot around chat and messaging. If your team needs several channels plus traceable cases and escalation, keep Zammad on the shortlist rather than assuming a replacement will be a better fit.
The comparison below draws on a WZ-IT comparison published September 10, 2026, whose repository snapshot is dated August 31, 2026; an Infronest overview published June 2026 and updated in August; and Zammad’s official documentation and license FAQ. These descriptions are not hands-on test results. Verify current features, licenses, and support terms before choosing.
Which Zammad alternative fits your support workflow?
| Your priority | Candidate to evaluate | Why it may fit | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared-mailbox work with assignment and conversation handling | FreeScout | The WZ-IT comparison describes it as a shared-mailbox replacement with a familiar mailbox-style interface. | Reporting, time tracking, workflows, knowledge base, and LDAP are described as paid-access modules. Price the specific modules you need. |
| Lean ticketing through email and web forms | osTicket | The comparison describes conventional ticket queues, assignment, and custom fields. | Test agent workflow, reporting, integrations, and current release and security activity against your needs. |
| Website chat, messengers, and social conversations | Chatwoot | The comparison identifies conversation handling across these channels as its focus. | Check the repository’s licensing boundary and whether the self-hosted edition covers your email case management, deadlines, and escalation needs. |
| Multichannel ticketing with escalation and history | Zammad | Official documentation describes email, chat, telephone, and social channels; the comparison maps this workflow to Zammad. | Confirm the specific self-hosted features, operating requirements, migration path, and support arrangement you need. |
| Tickets alongside assets and IT service processes | GLPI | The Infronest overview describes tickets, asset management, a CMDB, inventory, and ITIL-shaped processes. | Its broader IT operations scope may add complexity that a customer-facing support team does not need. Verify current plugins and terms. |
| E-commerce or storefront support | UVdesk Community | The overview positions it around e-commerce workflows and marketplace or storefront connectors. | Check the current community-edition license, maintenance, documentation, and integrations in first-party materials. |
The WZ-IT comparison’s repository facts use an August 31, 2026 snapshot, so treat them as dated context—not a live feature or support guarantee.
What should you compare before replacing Zammad?
Channels and the shape of a case
List the channels customers actually use: email and web forms, live chat and messengers, telephone, social channels, or some combination. Then decide whether the work behaves like a shared conversation or a case that remains open for days, needs deadlines, and may require escalation. A platform can handle a channel without providing the case controls your process requires.
#1 Best Overall

Workflow and identity requirements
Write down the specific capabilities agents need: assignment and queues, custom fields, canned replies, approvals, SLAs, automation, knowledge base, reporting, and history. For each one, confirm whether it is included, plugin- or module-dependent, paid, requires custom work, or is unavailable in the edition you would deploy. If LDAP or SSO is mandatory, verify its exact status for each candidate; the comparison specifically places FreeScout’s LDAP integration behind its module boundary.
License, operations, and support
“Open source” does not by itself tell you whether every feature is free, whether a hosted service costs extra, or what support is included. The comparison describes Zammad as AGPL-3.0, FreeScout’s core and modules as AGPL-3.0 with paid module access, and Chatwoot’s main body as MIT-licensed with separate terms for its enterprise/ directory tied to subscription and seat count. It describes osTicket as GPL-2.0. Confirm current license files and edition terms directly. Ask legal counsel to review obligations if you modify copyleft-licensed software or provide it over a network; this is not legal advice.

Self-hosting also means someone must own the server, database, mail delivery, TLS, backups, security updates, and restore practice. Include staff time, migration, and any optional features in the cost comparison—not just the software license. Obtain current written answers about security support, upgrade policy, hosting geography, and support response commitments before procurement.
What to know about each candidate
FreeScout: a shared-mailbox approach
FreeScout may be a natural candidate when agents already work from a shared inbox and want assignment and conversation handling without adopting a more formal ticket workflow. The WZ-IT comparison, published September 10, 2026, describes an AGPL-3.0 core and paid access to modules including reporting, time tracking, workflows, knowledge base, and LDAP integration; it also describes the module code as AGPL-3.0. Confirm current terms and price the capabilities your team actually needs rather than assuming every feature is included at no cost.

osTicket: conventional email and web-form ticketing
The comparison describes osTicket as lean ticketing under GPL-2.0, with email and web-form intake, queues, assignment, and custom fields. Its dated snapshot shows a slower push cadence than the other three products in that comparison, but that alone does not establish that development has stopped or indicate today’s support commitments. Check recent releases and security notices, then try representative cases with the agents who would use it.
Chatwoot: conversation-focused channels
Chatwoot is worth evaluating if website chat, messengers, and social conversations dominate customer contact. The WZ-IT comparison says its main body is MIT-licensed while the enterprise/ directory has separate terms tied to subscription and seat count. It also considers Chatwoot less obvious for traditional email cases that need deadlines and escalation. Because both the licensing boundary and self-hosted feature availability matter, inspect the current repository license files and edition matrix before deciding.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
GLPI, UVdesk, Request Tracker, and Redmine: adjacent rather than automatic replacements
The Infronest overview broadens the field beyond direct customer-support analogues. It presents GLPI as an ITSM and asset-management system that includes tickets, and UVdesk Community as oriented toward e-commerce support. It describes Request Tracker as an email workflow engine for complex workflows and incident response, and Redmine as a project and issue tracker that needs plugins for conventional helpdesk functions. Consider them when that broader purpose matches your requirements; verify current features and licensing with the projects themselves.
Peppermint: verify repository status before considering it
The WZ-IT comparison reports that the Peppermint repository was archived and its last push was September 21, 2025, and excludes it as a basis for a new deployment. That status is time-sensitive and should be checked against the live repository if Peppermint is still under consideration.

How do Zammad’s license and commercial offering compare?
Zammad’s official documentation says, “The Zammad software is and will stay open source,” and identifies GNU AGPLv3 as its license. That is the project’s stated policy, not an independent guarantee beyond the cited documentation. Its official license FAQ, published January 4, 2023, says commercial or private use has no license fee when AGPLv3 terms are followed and that an on-premise version will continue to be offered. Because the FAQ is dated, reconfirm current terms before relying on it for procurement.
The WZ-IT comparison describes Zammad’s commercial offering as centered on hosting, support, and consulting. That is one possible commercial boundary: open-source software can coexist with paid hosting, operational help, or support. For every candidate, separately check software license, feature access, hosted-service fees, and support terms.
How to evaluate and migrate safely
- Describe real work. Record inbound channels and representative cases, including one that needs escalation and one that involves replies over several days.
- Build a feature-and-edition checklist. Mark each requirement as included, module- or plugin-based, paid, custom, or unavailable, and verify each answer against current vendor or repository materials.
- Review legal and operational ownership. Get appropriate license review where needed and assign responsibility for mail, TLS, patching, backups, upgrades, and recovery.
- Test migration with representative data. Inventory tickets, contacts, attachments, canned replies, email routing, and authentication dependencies. Test export and import, and check that exported data can be restored or read independently.
- Pilot with agents. Have the people who triage, assign, collaborate, and report work through the pilot using real support scenarios. No hands-on evaluation of these platforms is represented here.
- Rehearse the cutover and recovery. Test inbound and outbound mail, sender authentication, spam handling, backups, upgrades, and restoration. Plan mail redirection so messages are not lost or duplicated, and confirm deliverability before switching production traffic.
- Get procurement-critical commitments in writing. Confirm security support, upgrade policy, hosting geography, support response terms, and any feature your decision depends on.
What evidence can—and cannot—settle the choice?
The WZ-IT comparison by Timo Wevelsiep was published September 10, 2026, and states that its repository comparison uses August 31, 2026 facts. It is useful for initial use-case mapping and licensing distinctions, but it is a secondary comparison, not a substitute for current project terms. The Infronest overview was published in June 2026 and updated in August; its adjacent-category and self-hosting observations should likewise be checked against first-party project material. Zammad’s official documentation and its January 4, 2023 license FAQ are the primary sources for the specific Zammad claims above, with the FAQ’s age in mind.
No independent market-size, adoption, productivity, or cost-saving statistic in the cited material establishes which product is best. Repository counts are weak selection proxies, not evidence of fit. The decision should turn on your workflow, required edition features, operational capacity, and current support commitments.
