VLC is the better-supported starting point for most Android users who want to play MKV files, especially if they need network-share access, multiple audio or subtitle tracks, or broad documented format support. MX Player is worth trying when you want its documented decoder choices and subtitle-appearance controls. Neither app is guaranteed to play every MKV smoothly: the file’s video and audio codecs, subtitle format, and your device all matter.
VLC vs. MX Player for MKV: at a glance
| What matters | VLC for Android | MX Player |
|---|---|---|
| MKV and format support | Google Play explicitly lists MKV and says codecs are included without separate downloads. Google Play listing | Official help focuses on device-dependent decoding and troubleshooting; it does not establish an equivalent format list. MX Player decoder help |
| Subtitles and audio tracks | VideoLAN documents embedded and external subtitles, including ASS and DVD subtitles, plus selection of multiple audio and subtitle tracks. VideoLAN VLC for Android | Help documents subtitle appearance settings and loading local or online subtitles; it also notes rendering caveats for SSA/ASS. MX Player subtitle help |
| Decoder options | Hardware decoding is available on supported devices; VideoLAN notes it is not supported everywhere. VideoLAN VLC for Android | Help describes Hardware, HW+, and software decoder modes; which works depends on the device and media framework. MX Player decoder help |
| Network and shared drives | VideoLAN documents network streams and browsing NAS or shared drives. VideoLAN VLC for Android | Not stated in the cited MX Player help. |
| Price and ads | Google Play describes VLC as free and ad-free. Google Play listing | Current edition pricing and geographic availability are not established by the cited sources. |
Why an MKV file may fail on Android
MKV is a container, not a promise that every player or device supports everything inside it. An MKV can contain different video and audio streams, subtitle formats, and profiles. Playback depends on whether the player can handle those streams and whether Android’s media framework and the device chipset can decode them. MX Player’s official help specifically notes that chipset capability, codec and profile support, middleware, and demuxing affect hardware playback; devices with similar specifications can behave differently. MX Player decoder help
- Video stutters or will not start: the chosen hardware decoder may not support the video stream on that device.
- Video plays but has no sound: the audio codec or selected audio track may be the issue; the MKV extension alone does not identify the cause.
- Subtitles look wrong or do not appear: the subtitle may be external, styled, or rendered differently by the app or device.
What each player offers
VLC: broad documented support and network playback
VideoLAN describes VLC for Android as a full VLC port. Its official page lists local media, network streams including HLS and DASH, NAS and shared-drive browsing, Android TV and Chromebook support, an equalizer, gestures, and hardware decoding. It also documents embedded and external subtitles—including ASS and DVD subtitles—and selection among audio and subtitle tracks. VideoLAN cautions: “Hardware decoding often provides better performance but is not supported on all devices.” VideoLAN VLC for Android
The Google Play listing names MKV alongside formats such as MP4, AVI, MOV, Ogg, FLAC, TS, M2TS, Wv, and AAC, and says codecs are included without separate downloads. Those are publisher-described features, not a guarantee that every codec/profile in every file will play on every handset. Google Play listing

MX Player: decoder selection and subtitle controls
MX Player’s help describes Hardware, HW+, and software decoder choices. Switching modes can help troubleshoot playback when a device’s hardware path does not handle a stream as expected. The documentation explains that hardware decoding depends on the chipset and Android media framework, rather than the file’s MKV container alone. It also mentions AC3, EAC3, and DTS as codecs not shipped inside the referenced configuration, with custom codec packages potentially available. This is a note about that configuration, not proof that every current build lacks those codecs. MX Player decoder help
MX Player’s subtitle help describes adjusting font, color, text scale, and related appearance settings, choosing a subtitle file from the video folder or opening a path, and using an online subtitle option. It also notes SSA/ASS styling and device-specific subtitle-acceleration caveats; the documentation does not establish that its subtitle rendering is better than VLC’s. MX Player subtitle help

How to troubleshoot an MKV that will not play properly
- Try the same file in the other player. If it works in one app but not the other, that points to a difference in decoder support or handling, not a universal property of MKV.
- In MX Player, change the decoder mode. Try Hardware, HW+, or software decoding where those options are available. The labels and behavior can vary with the app build and device; the official help describes these modes as device-dependent. MX Player decoder help
- If there is no sound, check the audio track and codec. Select another embedded audio track if the file has one, then compare playback in the other app. Do not assume the MKV container is responsible.
- If subtitles are the problem, test the subtitle file separately. In MX Player, its help describes selecting a local subtitle file or an online subtitle option and changing appearance settings. MX Player subtitle help
How to make a fair comparison on your phone
Use the same Android device, the same file, and current versions of both apps. Check each issue separately rather than judging by whether the video opens:
- Does playback stay smooth, including during seeking?
- Does the correct audio track play, with sound in sync?
- Do subtitles appear, stay synchronized, and render as intended?
- Does playback affect battery life differently during the same viewing session?
Include a file that reflects what you actually watch, particularly if it uses 10-bit video, an unusual audio codec, styled subtitles, or high resolution. A feature list cannot determine which app will perform better on a particular handset and file; no universal performance winner is established by the available official materials.
