For example, Adobe describes Acrobat Pro 2024 desktop as a one-time purchase that provides three years of desktop access, while PDF-XChange describes its licensed version as usable in perpetuity under its license terms.
1. Confirm how long the license lasts
Look for the license agreement, not just the product label or checkout wording. Check whether the license lets you keep using the specific version you bought indefinitely, or grants access only for a defined period. Also look for conditions that could affect continued use, such as a change of computer or operating system, and whether you can reinstall the version later.
The distinction is visible in these two products’ published terms. Adobe says it stopped selling perpetual Acrobat versions after Acrobat 2020 and describes Acrobat Pro 2024 desktop as a one-time upfront purchase providing three years of access to Acrobat desktop. The page reviewed does not establish what access is available after those three years, so confirm the current terms for your region and purchase before relying on continued use. Adobe’s Acrobat plans and pricing page may change.
PDF-XChange’s Versions 11.x EULA, last amended April 8, 2026, says each licensed user may use the software in perpetuity, subject to the agreement. 2. Separate security fixes from feature upgrades
“Updates included” can mean different things. Ask whether the purchase includes security patches, bug fixes, and new feature releases, and for how long each entitlement lasts. A product may continue to receive security updates without receiving new features, or may allow use of the purchased release while charging separately for later major versions.
Adobe says Acrobat Pro 2024 desktop includes quarterly security updates but no feature enhancements. PDF-XChange says optional annual maintenance entitles a license holder to update to newer versions released after purchase and before the maintenance expiration date. The exact entitlement depends on the agreement and version; consult PDF-XChange’s licensing documentation.
3. Compare what the license actually covers

These terms are not interchangeable, and they do not establish a price winner. Compare the amount you would pay over the period you expect to use the editor, including any maintenance or replacement purchase, using current regional pricing and terms. 4. Match the edition to your actual PDF work
Do not assume every edition includes every tool. Make a short list of the tasks you need, then confirm each one is included in the edition and license you intend to buy.

- Scanned documents and sensitive information: Adobe lists OCR for scanned documents and redaction among Pro capabilities. Confirm that the edition you select includes the functions you need. A redaction button alone does not establish that a workflow meets a particular legal or compliance requirement.
- Forms, signatures, and conversion: Check the product’s current feature list and test the specific form, signature, or conversion workflow you depend on.
- PDF-XChange features: The PDF Association profile lists editing, OCR, redaction, forms, and signature validation. 5. Check platforms, devices, and access requirements
Confirm the supported operating system and whether you need desktop, browser, or mobile access. Adobe says its Acrobat Pro 2024 desktop purchase does not include Acrobat online browser or mobile services. PDF-XChange Editor is described as a Windows desktop application; do not assume it provides a web or mobile edition. Check the current vendor terms for activation, account, internet, and offline-use requirements: the cited materials do not establish those details.
For an individual PDF-XChange license, the licensing documentation allows one desktop and one secondary device for the same primary user. That is not the same as a team or concurrent-user license. Confirm the allowed users and devices for any product, particularly before installing it across a workplace.

6. Test representative files before committing
Use copies of the PDFs you actually handle, not just a sample document supplied with the editor. A feature list cannot tell you how well a particular file will render or whether its workflow suits you.
- Edit text and check that fonts, spacing, and page layout remain acceptable.
- Run OCR on a representative scan and inspect recognition quality, especially on tables, small print, and multi-column pages.
- Complete and save forms, then reopen the file to check that entries remain intact.
- Validate your digital-signature workflow and confirm that saving or converting a file does not disrupt it.
- For redaction, confirm that the sensitive content is actually removed from the saved document rather than merely covered visually; the cited feature lists do not certify a particular implementation.
- Export or convert a file and inspect the output for missing content, altered formatting, or other problems.
7. Keep what you need to reinstall
If the agreement lets you continue using an older release after maintenance ends, save the receipt, license terms, key, and installer/version files somewhere you can retrieve them. PDF-XChange’s 2026 EULA says buyers who do not maintain access are responsible for keeping installation files because older versions are not provided perpetually. Check the relevant vendor’s current policy before assuming an installer will remain available.

- Is this perpetual use of a specified release, or access for a stated period?
- What happens when security updates, maintenance, or feature upgrades end?
- Does the exact edition include every task you need?
- Are your operating system, devices, and web or mobile needs covered?
- Are the user and device limits suitable for your setup?
- Have you tested your own representative PDFs and checked the saved output?
- Can you retain the installer and license details if you need to reinstall?
