Use Storage Sense for recurring, mostly hands-off cleanup of eligible files on your Windows system drive. Choose manual cleanup when you want to inspect categories and decide what to remove, or when you need to clear a particular cache. Check each category before deleting: a cleanup option can affect personal files or remove the ability to roll back a Windows upgrade.
How Storage Sense and manual cleanup differ
| Decision | Storage Sense | Manual cleanup |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Configure eligible categories, then let Windows clean them automatically. | Start a cleanup yourself and select the categories or files to remove. |
| Best for | Routine maintenance when you want Windows to respond to low disk space. | A one-time cleanup, investigating a specific category, or choosing personal files and apps. |
| Attention required | Less after setup. Windows must be signed in and online for more than 10 minutes for Storage Sense to run. | More: you initiate the action and review what will be removed. |
| Scope and caution | Works on the system drive, usually C:. Downloads and cloud content are excluded unless you enable their options. | Depending on the tool and selection, categories can include personal files or previous Windows installation files. Review before confirming. |
Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; menu names and available settings can vary by version.
Choose based on what is filling the drive
Use Storage Sense for recurring low-space maintenance
Storage Sense is the better fit if you want Windows to automatically remove eligible temporary files when disk space is low. With default settings, it cleans unnecessary temporary files; it does not automatically manage Downloads or cloud content unless you enable those options. You can also configure how long items remain in the Recycle Bin before Windows removes them. Review those settings before leaving Storage Sense on.
Storage Sense works on the system drive only, which contains Windows and is usually C:. Microsoft also says the feature needs the device to be signed in and online for more than 10 minutes to run. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions for the options available on your Windows version.

Use manual cleanup when you want to choose what goes
For a deliberate, one-time cleanup, open Settings > System > Storage. You can review Temporary files and Cleanup recommendations, which can surface temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Select only categories whose effects you understand. Microsoft’s free-up-drive-space guidance describes these options.
Disk Cleanup is another built-in option: it lets you select file categories and, where available, system files. It is useful if you want to inspect cleanup choices rather than rely on an automatic schedule. Instructions and available selections can differ across Windows versions; consult Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup guidance.

“Cache cleanup” depends on which cache you mean
There is no single Windows action that clears every cache. For the Microsoft Store cache, Microsoft’s low-space instructions say to run wsreset.exe. For the Delivery Optimization cache, Windows ordinarily clears it automatically; if you need to remove it manually to reclaim space, Microsoft documents using Disk Cleanup and selecting Delivery Optimization Files. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s low-disk-space guidance.
Before deleting any item labeled temporary or cache, read its description and consider the consequence. A category name alone does not establish that its contents are disposable.

Check what is using space before you clean
- See available space. In File Explorer, open This PC, or go to Settings > System > Storage to inspect which categories are using space.
- Decide whether cleanup should be automatic or deliberate. For recurring maintenance, turn on Storage Sense and review the Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud-content options. For a one-time cleanup, inspect Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations and select only understood categories; Disk Cleanup is an alternative for temporary and system-file categories.
- Check for large personal files. If videos, photos, or other files you want to keep account for much of the usage, sort them by size and move suitable items to external storage, such as a USB drive or SD card. Deleting a cache will not solve space taken up by those files. See Microsoft’s advice for freeing drive space.
- Handle upgrade rollback files carefully. If you select Previous Windows Installation(s), Windows deletes the rollback files. That removes the option to return to the previous installation, and the deletion cannot be undone. Microsoft says those files are normally removed automatically 10 days after an upgrade; see its Windows drive-space guidance.
How much free space might an update need?
Microsoft Support says typical feature updates require 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space, and typical quality updates require 2 GB–3 GB or more. The page does not state a publication year, and these are guidance figures rather than guarantees for every PC, update, account, or configuration. See Microsoft’s update-space guidance.
OneDrive files and local storage
Making OneDrive files online-only frees local disk space without permanently deleting them. Starting with Windows 11, version 22H2, Microsoft’s current guidance says the default online-only threshold is more than 30 days unopened; the page does not state a publication year. Storage Sense’s handling of cloud content depends on its settings, so review those options if you do not want it to manage cloud files. Details are in Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance.

Will one method free more space or make Windows faster?
Microsoft’s documentation explains how the features work, but it does not provide a head-to-head comparison of Storage Sense and manual cleanup for speed, space recovered, or performance improvement. The appropriate choice is about control and convenience: automation for eligible routine cleanup, manual selection when you want to inspect or target what is removed.
