Windows has no single switch that hides every screen-sharing or recording indicator. First identify what is displaying it: Windows’ screenshot border, Game Bar, a browser, or the meeting or capture app. The available controls do different things—some govern whether apps may turn off Windows’ border, while others block screen capture and can stop sharing from working.
Identify which indicator you’re seeing
A visible border or recording notice does not, by itself, reveal which component created it. Check the app or feature that is actively capturing or sharing before changing a setting. The Windows screenshot-border policy, Game Bar indicator values, and Edge screen-capture policy are separate controls; none is documented as a universal way to hide every indicator.
- Windows screenshot border: Windows has a policy called “Let Windows apps turn off the screenshot border.” It determines whether apps can turn off that border; it is not a general user-facing switch for hiding every capture notice.
- Game Bar: Microsoft lists two GameDVR registry value names associated with toggling its recording indicator. The reference does not establish a supported universal procedure or say these values affect other apps.
- Browser or meeting app: A browser-based meeting or another capture app may have its own indicator or permission controls. Check the app responsible for the active capture.
Control the Windows screenshot border with policy
Microsoft documents “Let Windows apps turn off the screenshot border” under Computer Configuration > Windows Components > App Privacy. The policy applies to Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, and is available on Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. See Microsoft’s Privacy Policy CSP documentation for the policy details.
The policy offers three choices. They govern whether apps may turn off the border, not whether every Windows or third-party indicator disappears:

- User is in control: Employees can decide through Settings > Privacy.
- Force Allow: Apps can turn off the border, and the user cannot change that setting.
- Force Deny: Apps cannot turn off the border, and the user cannot change that setting.
The policy supports a default setting and per-app settings; a per-app setting overrides the default. If an app is already open when the policy is applied, restart the app or device for the change to take effect for that app. If an organization manages the device, an administrator may control this policy.
Game Bar recording-indicator values are not a universal fix
Microsoft’s Windows 11 settings reference lists VKMToggleRecordingIndicator and VKToggleRecordingIndicator as GameDVR registry values associated with toggling the recording indicator. The reference identifies the values but does not establish a general procedure for removing indicators, nor does it say they control notices from other capture tools. See the Windows 11 settings reference.

Edge can block web screen capture—but sharing may stop
Microsoft Edge has a separate ScreenCaptureAllowed policy for web screen-capture APIs. Disabling it causes those API calls to fail; Microsoft gives web-based online-meeting screen sharing as an example of functionality that will not work. This is a capture-permission control, not a way to keep web sharing working while simply hiding its indicator. Read Microsoft’s ScreenCaptureAllowed policy documentation before applying it.
Choose the setting that matches your goal
| Goal | Relevant control | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Set whether Windows apps may turn off the screenshot border | Windows “Let Windows apps turn off the screenshot border” policy | Controls app access to turning off that border; not a global indicator-hiding switch. |
| Toggle the Game Bar recording indicator | GameDVR values listed in Microsoft’s Windows 11 settings reference | Reference lists the value names, but does not establish a universal procedure or effect on other apps. |
| Prevent websites from using screen-capture APIs in Edge | Edge ScreenCaptureAllowed policy |
Screen-share API calls fail, so web meeting sharing may not work. |
| Remove an indicator belonging to another app | That app’s own settings or controls | Windows policies above do not establish control over third-party indicators. |
If the indicator remains
- Identify which feature is capturing: Windows, Game Bar, Edge or another browser, a meeting app, or a graphics utility.
- Match the desired outcome to the control: changing the Windows screenshot-border policy, toggling a Game Bar indicator, and blocking web capture have different effects.
- For the Windows policy, confirm that the device runs a supported Windows 11 edition and that organizational policy is not controlling the setting.
- Restart an app that was already open when the Windows policy changed; if needed, restart the device.
- If the notice belongs to a browser, meeting, recording, or graphics app, check that app’s own settings. Do not assume a Windows setting will remove it.
Microsoft Q&A includes the community phrasing “Turn off the yellow screen border Windows 11 uses to warn of screen capture.” That question is useful for recognizing the symptom, but it is community content rather than policy documentation: Microsoft Q&A.
