If an MKV video plays on Android but has no sound, the file’s audio codec may not be supported by the player, the wrong embedded audio track may be selected, or sound may be routed or configured unexpectedly. MKV is a container—not a guarantee that every audio format inside it will play. Check the audio track and playback settings before converting the file.
Why an MKV file can play video without sound
MKV (Matroska) is a container that can hold video, audio, subtitles, and multiple tracks. The .mkv extension alone does not identify the audio codec or show whether a particular Android device and player can decode it. Android’s supported media formats are useful platform-level guidance, but playback can also depend on the Android version, device implementation, and app.
Video and audio are separate streams, so the picture can work even when the audio stream is unsupported, missing, or not selected. A file with multiple audio tracks may also have a language or commentary track that is not the one you expect.
Fix MKV playback with no sound, step by step

Check volume, mute, and audio output
Raise the phone’s media volume and make sure the player is not muted. Temporarily disconnect Bluetooth devices and check that sound works in another app. These checks help distinguish a general output problem from one specific to the MKV file.

Try every audio track in the file
Open the player’s audio-track menu and select each available track. If the player shows no audio track, the file may contain no sound stream; Android settings cannot restore audio that is not in the file. VLC for Android documents support for selecting multiple audio tracks on its features page.

Find out which audio codec the file uses
Use a reputable media-information utility or the player’s stream-information screen, if available, to identify the audio codec and tracks. Compare the codec with Android’s supported media formats for the relevant platform version. The file’s extension is not enough to diagnose compatibility.

Test the file in VLC for Android
Try the official VLC for Android app, then check its track selection and audio-output settings. VideoLAN describes VLC as a broad-format player, making it a useful compatibility test—not a guarantee that every file will work on every device.

Check the player’s audio-output settings
If an audio track is present but remains silent, inspect the player’s output configuration. VLC’s Android audio documentation describes digital audio passthrough and audio-rendering APIs. Change one relevant setting at a time, test playback, and note the original value so you can restore it.

Convert or remux only after checking the stream
If the codec is not supported by the player and device you want to use, conversion to a compatible audio format may help. Remuxing changes how streams are packaged; it does not necessarily change an unsupported audio codec. The appropriate fix depends on the file’s actual streams, so do not assume that changing the container alone will restore sound.
Choosing between the built-in player and VLC
There is no universal winner: compatibility depends on the particular file, app, Android version, and device. Compare the players using the same file and output route rather than treating success in one app as proof that every MKV will work.

What to include when reporting a VLC problem
If the silence is reproducible in VLC, include the file’s audio codec and track details, VLC version, device model, and Android version. VideoLAN asks users reporting issues to provide details such as the app version, device, and Android version in its project guidance. These details help distinguish a file-specific compatibility problem from an app or device issue.
