To avoid shrinking a wool blanket, follow its care label before choosing a wash method. Wash it at home only if the label permits; for a machine-washable blanket, use the specified wool cycle, cold water, and wool detergent. Dry it flat with its wet weight supported, away from direct sunlight, and do not tumble-dry unless the blanket’s label explicitly allows it.
Check the care label before washing
Wool content alone does not mean a blanket is safe to wash at home. Check the blanket’s own washing and drying instructions, and consider whether it is too large or delicate for your household machine. If the label says “do not wash” or “dry-clean only,” do not wet-wash it at home. Cold water is not a substitute for a do-not-wash instruction. See Woolmark’s guide to washing instruction symbols.
Choose the method the label allows: professional care or no wet washing, hand washing when specified, or machine washing only when the blanket is identified as machine washable.
Refresh and spot-clean between washes
A full wash may not be necessary for routine care. The Woolmark Company recommends shaking the blanket and airing it where air can circulate. To refresh the surface, lay it flat and brush gently along the grain with a soft-bristle garment brush. Its blanket-care guidance also recommends storing a clean, dry blanket in a breathable bag.

- REPLENISHES LANOLIN, PROTECTS PROTEIN FIBERS: Regular soaps and detergents strip the natural lanolin that keeps wool soft and resilient. Outback Gold puts it back, so protein fibers such as wool, cashmere, alpaca, mohair, angora, silk and sheepskin stay supple wash after wash. Since it is lab tested to be pH neutral, it never attacks the fiber the way alkaline detergents do. Contains natural lanolin, derived from sheep wool.
- NO SLS, NO ENZYMES, NO BLEACH: Plant-derived cleansers lift soil with no sulfates, phosphates, bleach or formaldehyde releasing ingredients. Lanolin, aloe vera, castor oil and coconut oil condition and soften the fiber. Mild and low-sudsing by design for HE and standard machines. The cleaner works without excessive foam. Safe for all septic systems.
- HOW MUCH TO USE? THE CAP IS THE MEASURE: HE machine 1 to 2 capfuls per load. Standard machine 4 capfuls. Hand wash 1/2 capful per gallon of water. Sheepskin rug 4 capfuls per skin, soak 15-30 minutes. Rinsing is optional (great for spot cleaning and blocking). One 16 oz bottle goes furthest by hand, about 96 washes, or 16 to 32 HE loads.
- ORIGINAL SCENT, LIGHT FLORAL: A soft, clean scent you notice in the bottle and on damp wool, fading as items dry. Some people may find it strong. If you prefer no fragrance at all, choose our Fragrance Free option that has the same powerful formula, but without tea tree oil or fragrance.
- MACHINE, HAND WASH, SOAK, SPOT CLEAN, BLOCK: Gentle cycle with no agitation in cool water, or hand wash and soak. Care for "dry clean only" sweaters, cashmere and silk at home. No rinse needed for spot cleaning or blocking a finished knit. Special formula, made in Idaho, USA. Desert Breeze Distributing is a woman-led, family-owned small business supplying wool, alpaca, and other natural fiber products and their care since 2013.
Blot spills instead of scrubbing
For a liquid spill, act promptly. Woolmark advises soaking the stained area with warm water and mild detergent, then blotting with a soft cloth. Do not scrub: rough handling can agitate the fibres.
Wash only by the method on the label
If machine washing is permitted
Use the wool wash cycle specified by the blanket’s care instructions, cold water, and a detergent intended for wool. Woolmark’s blanket-specific advice recommends a gentle wool cycle and cold water for machine-washable blankets. Do not infer that a blanket is machine washable just because another wool item has that care claim.

- FRAGRANCE FREE: Made without tea tree oil or added fragrance. The base ingredients, including lanolin and plant oils, carry a faint, mild natural scent of their own, so even though this is fragrance free, it is not completely odorless. What you notice in the bottle fades as items dry.

If hand washing is specified
Handle the blanket gently and follow its label. Care-symbol guidance advises against rubbing, pulling, or wringing. Press out excess water carefully, then reshape the blanket.
Choose a suitable detergent
Woolmark recommends a mild, neutral detergent made for wool. Avoid heavy-duty detergent, enzyme-containing “bio” detergent, and bleach. If using powdered detergent, dissolve it before adding it to the wash. Wool detergent is not a guarantee against shrinkage and does not make a non-washable blanket safe to wash. See Woolmark’s detergent guidance.

Dry the blanket with its weight supported
A wet wool blanket is heavy. Support its weight while it dries to help prevent stretching or distortion: Woolmark recommends hanging it flat over a clothesline. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Its blanket guidance advises against tumble-drying because a dryer can damage the blanket’s softness and shape. Use a dryer only if the blanket’s own care claim explicitly permits it; otherwise, dry it flat with adequate support.

Wool fibres have microscopic surface scales. According to Woolmark’s technical explanation of machine-washable wool, heat and moisture can lift these scales, while mechanical agitation helps them interlock. The fibres can then entangle and form a denser fabric, causing felting and shrinkage. Shrink-resist treatments can reduce that risk in products designed for machine washing, but the blanket’s own care claim—not its fibre content alone—should determine how you wash it.
