A lint roller can lift loose surface fibers, and a wool care comb can remove pills. These steps can tidy the surface, but they will not fix continuing fiber loss from the weave. Don’t wash the blanket unless its label allows it, and stop using it if it causes persistent or significant skin irritation.
First, work out what the blanket is doing
A few loose fibers on the surface or pills where the blanket rubs against other fabrics are different from fibers continuing to escape the weave. Some fluffy wool blankets shed a little at first and develop friction-related pills, according to The British Blanket Company’s wool blanket FAQs. That does not mean every shedding problem is normal. If gentle surface care does not help, ask the manufacturer for guidance specific to the blanket’s material, weave, and finish.
Itch also has more than one possible explanation. Coarser fibers can feel irritating, while contact allergy to wool alcohols (lanolin) is a separate possibility. The blanket alone cannot identify the cause of an individual’s symptoms.
How to reduce loose fibers and pilling
- Check the label. Identify the fiber blend and whether the blanket is approved for hand washing, machine washing, or dry cleaning. Care varies by item, so follow its instructions rather than assuming all wool can be treated the same way.
- Air and shake it outdoors. Woolmark recommends shaking a wool blanket outside and hanging it where air can circulate. This is a gentle first step before considering a wash. See Woolmark’s blanket-care guidance.
- Brush gently along the grain. Lay the blanket flat and use a soft-bristle garment brush in the direction the surface fibers lie. Woolmark recommends this for surface soil and smoothing fibers. Avoid scrubbing or raking hard, which can disturb the surface.
- Pick up loose surface fibers. Roll a lint roller over the blanket to collect fibers resting on the surface. This removes loose material; it does not stop fibers that keep coming out of the weave.
- Remove pills carefully. Use a wool care comb with gentle strokes in one direction, as recommended by The British Blanket Company. Pay particular attention to areas that rub, and avoid aggressive combing.
When and how to wash it
Washing is not a default cure for shedding or itch. Check the care label first. If it says dry clean only, do not machine wash. If machine washing is permitted, Woolmark advises using the gentle wool cycle, cold water, and a specified wool-wash detergent. Do not put the blanket in a dryer; Woolmark recommends drying it flat over a line and away from direct sunlight. The item’s own label takes precedence over general care advice.

What to do if the blanket still sheds or feels itchy
If fibers continue to escape
If airing, gentle brushing, and careful removal of surface fibers do not resolve the problem, contact the manufacturer with the blanket’s material and care-label details. Persistent fiber loss may be related to its particular material, weave, or finish. The available care guidance does not establish a universal treatment for structural shedding, so avoid escalating to forceful brushing or washing contrary to the label.
If wearing or using it causes irritation
Stop using the blanket if irritation is persistent or significant, and seek medical advice. The British Blanket Company notes that itch can relate to coarse fibers, while the Contact Dermatitis Institute’s information on wool alcohols (lanolin) describes contact allergy as another possibility. Neither source can diagnose the cause for a particular person.
