Enter =UPPER(A2) in a blank column beside your source text, replacing A2 with the first cell you want to convert. Fill the formula down to create uppercase results in the new column; the original cells remain unchanged while you review them.
Convert text with the UPPER formula
- Insert a blank column beside the column containing the original text.
- In the first row of the blank column, enter
=UPPER(A2), changingA2to the source cell for that row. Excel’s UPPER function converts the referenced text to uppercase. - Fill the formula down for the remaining rows. If the range is an Excel table, entering the formula in a calculated column can fill it through that column automatically, as described in Microsoft’s case-change instructions.
- Check the uppercase results in the new column. Your original text remains in its original cells.
The formula creates a result in another cell; it does not overwrite its source. Because it refers to the source cell, the result updates if that source text changes.
Keep the original or replace it with fixed uppercase text
If you want to keep both versions, leave the original and uppercase columns in place. If you decide to replace the original text, copy the converted results and use Paste Values on the original cells. This commits the uppercase text rather than the temporary formulas. Remove the extra column if you no longer need it.
Use Flash Fill as an alternative
Flash Fill can infer a case-conversion pattern from an example. Type the uppercase version of the first source entry in the adjacent column, then try Data > Flash Fill or press Ctrl+E in the documented desktop workflow. See Microsoft’s Flash Fill instructions and its guidance on changing text case.

Unlike the explicit UPPER formula, Flash Fill infers what to do from the examples you provide. It works best with consistent input, and pattern recognition can produce unsuitable results. Review the filled column before using it to replace source text. The exact steps and availability can vary by Excel version and platform.

Uppercase text is not number formatting
UPPER changes the case of text. It is not a number-formatting tool. Microsoft documents the TEXT function for formatting numeric values as text and recommends keeping the original value in one cell and using TEXT in another when that is needed. For an all-uppercase text result, use UPPER.

Microsoft’s support pages list UPPER for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, including listed Mac editions. The case-change guidance also lists iPad, iPhone, and Android variants. These applicability lists do not mean every interface or menu path is identical across platforms.
