The announced remake reimagines the first game; it is not a new sequel or a replacement for the trilogy’s story sequence.
What order should I play The Witcher games in?
- The Witcher (2007): Start with the first game in CD PROJEKT RED’s original RPG trilogy.
- The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings: Continue with the second game, whose branching narrative is shaped by Geralt’s choices.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: Finish the trilogy with Geralt’s search for Ciri, which the publisher describes as wrapping up the original saga.
This order follows the publisher’s presentation of the original trilogy and gives a first-time player the story in sequence. CD PROJEKT RED’s Witcher Classics page frames these three games as Geralt’s saga.
How does the remake fit into the order?
The Witcher Remake is a modern reimagining of the 2007 original, rather than the next numbered entry after The Witcher 3. CD PROJEKT RED announced it on October 26, 2022, describing it as being built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, in early development at Fool’s Theory with full creative supervision from CD PROJEKT RED. The announcement gave no release date.
The company’s first-half 2026 update plans The Witcher 4 for 2028 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past for 2027. Those are company plans, not guarantees, and they do not establish when the remake will launch. CD PROJEKT RED’s investor updates provide the broader schedule context, but the main trilogy order remains unchanged.

Are the spin-offs required?
No. The publisher does not place spin-offs among the required steps in the main Geralt trilogy.
- Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is an optional Witcher-universe game starring Queen Meve, with story battles using mechanics adapted from GWENT. It is separate from Geralt’s three-game sequence. See the official Thronebreaker page.
- The Witcher Adventure Game is a digital tabletop experience, and GWENT is listed separately on the official series site. Neither is needed to follow the trilogy’s order. The official games page lists these alongside the broader franchise.
Which editions and platforms should I check?
Do not assume all three games are natively available on every current console. The official Classics page lists The Witcher for PC and Mac, and The Witcher 2 for PC, Mac, and Xbox. Check the relevant platform store for the edition and compatibility you need.
