Plug in the speaker, hold the unlocked device nearby, tap Set Up, follow the prompts, then tap Done. Use the Home app to manage settings afterward.
What you need before setup
- An iPhone or iPad running current iOS or iPadOS. Apple says a Mac cannot set up HomePod.
- Bluetooth turned on and the iPhone or iPad connected to the Wi-Fi network you want HomePod to use. HomePod uses the network connected to the setup device; Apple does not recommend using a personal hotspot.
Some settings from the setup device may carry over, including Wi-Fi, Siri preferences, Apple Account, Analytics and Location Services preferences, and the Apple Music subscription configured there. Apple’s setup instructions do not say that an Apple Music subscription is required to set up the speaker. Setup time can vary.

Set up HomePod or HomePod mini
- Plug HomePod into power and wait for the setup indicators described in Apple’s setup guide.
- Unlock your iPhone or iPad and hold it close to the speaker.
- When the setup prompt appears, tap Set Up.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to choose settings and complete setup, then tap Done when prompted.
If the prompt does not appear, Apple suggests locking and unlocking the iPhone or iPad and bringing it close to HomePod again. After the initial flow, use the Home app to manage the speaker’s settings.
Use Siri and personalize requests
Ask Siri aloud, or touch and hold the top of HomePod to make a request. For example, you can ask Siri to play or stop music, adjust the volume, or send playback to a named room. Apple documents these audio controls in its HomePod User Guide. Available requests and features can vary by language and region.

Household members can set up voice recognition using their own iPhone or iPad. Personal Content has separate settings and enables additional kinds of personal requests. These options allow household personalization, but feature availability varies.
Send an Intercom message
Intercom lets you send a spoken message throughout the home or to a particular room or zone. Messages can be received on HomePod speakers and household members’ iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices. Manage notifications and which household members or speakers can use Intercom in the Home app under Home Settings. See Apple’s Intercom instructions for details.

Make a stereo pair
For left and right stereo channels, pair two HomePod speakers of the same model and assign them to the same room. Pairing and ungrouping are managed in the Home app. In a stereo pair, only one speaker responds to Siri requests, plays alarms, and acts as a speakerphone. Follow Apple’s stereo-pair instructions to configure or separate the speakers.

Set up on a captive-portal Wi-Fi network
Some networks, such as hotel or school Wi-Fi, require a web login. Apple documents a setup or reconnect path for certain captive-portal networks: connect the iPhone or iPad to that network and follow the setup or reconnect instructions. While HomePod is connected to a captive-portal Wi-Fi network, it cannot be used in a stereo pair or home-cinema configuration. This restriction is specific to captive-portal Wi-Fi and should not be assumed to apply to every managed or public network.

Where to change settings afterward
Once setup is complete, return to the Home app to manage HomePod settings, including Siri-related personalization, Intercom access and notifications, and speaker pairing. Apple’s interface labels can change as HomePod software updates, so follow the current labels shown in the app.
