Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor supported 8BitDo keyboards and the Retro R8 Mouse, use 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 to map controls, set up macros, and adjust available lighting or mouse settings. First identify the exact model and edition: features differ, and some keyboards—including the original Retro Mechanical Keyboard—have no backlight to customize.
Before you start: identify your exact device
Check the label or packaging for the full product name and edition. 8BitDo adds support for specific variants in software updates, so do not assume that instructions for one Retro keyboard or mouse apply to another. Use the matching software version and confirm that your device appears in the current Ultimate Software V2 information before trying to configure it.
The official listing names Windows 10 and above and macOS 13 and above as supported platforms. Check that page for current requirements and device compatibility, since software listings can change.
Customize controls and macros with Ultimate Software V2
Map or disable supported keys and buttons
Connect a supported device and open Ultimate Software V2. Its feature description covers changing or disabling supported key functions and customizing keys. For the Retro R8 Mouse, 8BitDo also documents assigning functions to mouse buttons. The available controls and assignment points depend on the device; follow the options the software presents for your exact model rather than relying on menu names from another edition.
#1 Best Overall
- Inspired by the classics. Compatible with Windows 10(1903) or above, and Android 9.0 or above.
- 87-key layout. Kailh Box Switch V2 White. Dye-sub PBT keycaps.
- Top mount style. Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.

- Classic power status LED, with independent control panel.
Record and assign a macro
Ultimate Software V2 supports recording macro instructions and assigning a keystroke to trigger multiple instructions. Create the macro with the software’s recording feature, then assign it only to a control the connected device supports. Macro functions and assignable controls are device-specific; the software’s general feature description does not mean every 8BitDo keyboard or mouse supports every macro option.
Adjust lighting only on a keyboard with lighting hardware
Ultimate Software V2 lists lighting adjustments, but software cannot add lighting to a keyboard that lacks the necessary hardware. The original Retro Mechanical Keyboard has no backlight, and 8BitDo says one cannot be installed. By contrast, the Gears of War: E-Day Retro 87 product page describes RGB backlighting with eight modes. That specification belongs to that edition; do not assume every 8BitDo keyboard has the same lighting or controls.

- Official collaboration with Mecha BREAK: PANTHER
- 87 keys. RGB Backlight. Function shortcut keys and Fn lock. Integrated Game Bar Button.
- Kailh Glaze Jellyfish Pro linear switches. Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
- Double-layered ABS keycaps with matte UV coating. MDA-like height. Top mount style.
- Fast-mapping on Super Buttons (no software needed)
Use keyboard fast mapping without software, if supported
The manual for the original Retro Mechanical Keyboard documents a hardware fast-mapping mode. The sequence below applies to that documented setup; check your own edition’s manual before using it.
- Press the fast-mapping button to enter fast-mapping mode.
- Hold the key or keys you want to assign.
- Press the programmable key that should trigger those keys to finish the mapping. The manual allows up to six keys to be assigned to one programmable key.
To clear the fast mappings documented for this keyboard, hold the fast-mapping button for five seconds. This is separate from software mapping and should not be assumed to apply to other editions.

Configure the Retro R8 Mouse separately
Mouse button assignments are only part of the R8’s configuration. Its product page also lists performance controls including DPI, polling rate, scroll direction, and lift-off distance. Adjust these according to the options available for your supported mouse in Ultimate Software V2; they are mouse-specific settings, not keyboard controls. See the Retro R8 Mouse product information for the listed controls.

If a setting or device is missing
- Recheck the complete model name and edition, then confirm support in the current Ultimate Software V2 listing.
- Make sure you are using the software version intended for that product and a listed operating system.
- If there is no lighting option, verify that the keyboard has backlighting hardware; the original Retro Mechanical Keyboard does not.
- If a macro or mapping control is unavailable, treat that as a model-specific limitation rather than assuming a universal feature.
