To choose a flagship phone, first decide which operating system and device ecosystem you want to keep using. Then compare the exact models for size, camera capabilities, battery and charging, storage, durability, support and total cost. Specifications show what a manufacturer says a phone can do; they do not prove that it takes better photos or lasts longer in everyday use.

1. Start with the operating system and ecosystem

Think about the devices, apps, accessories and services you already rely on. Staying with a familiar platform may make it easier to keep using that setup, while switching means checking whether the apps and accessories you need are available and work as expected. The cited product specifications do not establish that iOS or Android is objectively better, so begin with your own priorities rather than a brand ranking.

2. Pick a size that suits how you use your phone

Compare screen dimensions, resolution and the physical size of each exact model. A larger display can suit reading, video and games; a smaller phone may be easier to pocket or operate one-handed. Screen size alone does not tell you how comfortable a phone will feel, so handle the model if possible.

Current manufacturer examples illustrate the range: Samsung lists the Galaxy S26 at 6.3 inches, the S26+ at 6.7 inches and the S26 Ultra at 6.9 inches in its UK buying guide. Google’s comparison gives the Pixel 10 Pro a 6.3-inch display. These are different products and markets; check local model specifications before buying. Samsung’s UK mobile phone buying guide and Google’s Pixel comparison provide the respective details.

3. Match the camera system to the pictures you take

Consider whether you regularly shoot distant subjects, wide landscapes, close-ups, moving people, night scenes or video. Check which lenses are included, the telephoto zoom range, stabilization and available video modes. Megapixel counts describe sensor resolution, not overall image quality; processing, lens design and shooting conditions also matter.

For example, Google’s Pixel 10 Pro comparison lists a 50MP wide camera, a 48MP ultrawide with macro focus and a 48MP 5x telephoto. Samsung describes the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s main camera as 200MP with an f/1.4 aperture, while Apple lists a 48MP Pro Fusion camera system for iPhone 17 Pro. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a shared independent camera test. Review sample photos or testing that compares the exact phones under the same conditions before choosing a camera winner. Sources: Google, Samsung UK and Apple.

4. Separate battery capacity, endurance and charging

Battery capacity in milliampere-hours (mAh) is not a direct measure of how long a phone will run. Real-world endurance varies with display settings, signal strength, apps and usage. Prefer independent tests using the same protocol when comparing runtime; do not treat a manufacturer’s figure or capacity as a cross-brand battery ranking.

Apple’s 2025 EU product information lists 47 hours of battery endurance per full charge cycle for the specified iPhone 17 Pro model. That is a regional product-information figure, not a promise of 47 hours of typical daily use or a directly comparable result against another phone. Apple’s EU product information also lists 1,000 battery endurance cycles for that model. Check the exact regional product sheet and its test definitions when using such figures.

Charging is a separate decision: check wired and wireless standards, the phone’s supported rates and whether a compatible adapter comes in the box. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro comparison says charging to up to 55% in about 30 minutes requires a 30W USB-C PPS charger or higher, sold separately. That condition does not mean every USB-C adapter can deliver the stated rate. See Google’s Pixel comparison for its charging specifications.

5. Choose enough storage for your ownership period

Photos, high-resolution video, downloaded media and apps can use substantial space. Estimate what you keep on the phone and choose a capacity that will still suit you later; confirm that the exact model and market offer that tier. Manufacturer comparison pages list configurations, but regional availability and pricing can differ. Google’s Pixel comparison and Samsung’s UK buying guide show their respective model options: Google Pixel comparison and Samsung UK buying guide.

6. Understand what durability ratings do and do not mean

Apple says iPhone 17 Pro was tested to IP68 under IEC 60529, with a stated maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. Google’s comparison lists the Pixel 10 Pro as IP68. These are defined ingress-protection ratings, not guarantees against damage in every situation. A rating by itself does not establish warranty coverage for liquid damage; check the warranty terms that apply where you live. Sources: Apple iPhone 17 Pro specifications and Google Pixel comparison.

7. Check software support, repairs and service

If you keep phones for several years, look for the exact model’s official operating-system and security-update commitment in your market. Also check battery-replacement service, repair access and parts availability. The cited model materials do not establish directly comparable official support-duration commitments for Apple, Google and Samsung, so verify each maker’s current policy rather than assuming support lasts equally long across brands.

8. Compare the full cost, not just the phone’s headline price

Compare the price of the storage tier you actually need and account for a compatible charger if required, plus any case, screen protection or repair costs you expect to incur. Treat trade-in offers as conditional: confirm current regional eligibility and terms. Prices, promotions and availability vary, and no current price or deal comparison is established here.

Use current model examples carefully

These examples help show what to inspect, not which phone is best for everyone. Manufacturer specifications are model-specific and may vary by region.

A quick decision checklist

  • Choose the platform that fits the devices, apps and services you already use.
  • Compare screen size and physical comfort against your everyday habits.
