Replacing the power button on the standard Samsung Galaxy S6 means opening the phone from the rear: remove the SIM tray, heat and lift the rear glass, then replace the internal power-button cable or the separate outer button cover as needed. Rear-glass removal destroys its adhesive, and the internal cable is delicate, so have replacement adhesive and the correct parts ready before you begin.
Identify which power-button part has failed
The Galaxy S6 has two distinct parts that may be described as a “power button.” The internal Galaxy S6 Power Button Cable contains the switch and contacts. The separate Galaxy S6 Power and Volume Buttons are the external covers; they do not include the internal switch cable. Check whether the outer cover is missing or damaged, or whether the button’s internal switching function has failed, before ordering.

- Replacement rear-glass adhesive. The guide cautions: “Removing the rear glass destroys the adhesive holding it in place.”
- A suction handle, SIM card eject tool, opening picks, an iOpener or suitable heat source, a Phillips #00 screwdriver, tweezers, and a spudger for carefully releasing contacts.
Work on a clear, stable surface and keep screws organized. The repair involves heating and prying the rear glass, removing screws, and handling a small flex cable; if you do not have suitable tools or are not comfortable with delicate cable work, a repair professional is a reasonable alternative.
Replace the power-button cable
- Remove the SIM tray. Use the SIM eject tool to eject and remove the tray before opening the phone.
- Heat and lift the rear glass. Warm the rear-cover adhesive, then use a suction handle and opening picks to separate the glass carefully. Avoid levering aggressively: strong adhesive makes entry difficult, and the glass can break.
- Open the phone and expose the midframe. Follow the model-specific guide to remove the required screws and open the phone until you can reach the power-button assembly.
- Remove the power-button bracket. Lift it carefully. The power-button cable remains attached to the midframe; do not pull it up with the bracket.
- Release the cable contacts gently. The spring-contact adhesive can hold more firmly than the cable itself. Slide a spudger beneath the contact points to release them rather than pulling on the flex cable, which can tear.
- Install the replacement and reassemble. Fit the replacement cable, then follow the guide’s reverse sequence. Use the rear-glass adhesive replacement instructions when reinstalling the glass; the original adhesive will not secure it after removal.
If only the outside button cover is damaged
Buy the external Galaxy S6 power-button cover rather than the internal cable if the cover is the only failed part. The cover and the switch cable are separate items, so a cable listing does not necessarily include the outer button. Confirm the exact model and the contents of the specific part listing before purchase.

Difficulty and risks
The largest access risk is cracking the rear glass while overcoming its adhesive. The iFixit teardown assigned the Galaxy S6 a repairability score of 4 out of 10 in 2015, with 10 described as easiest to repair; it identified the strongly adhered rear glass as a major obstacle to opening the phone. This is a rating of the device’s repairability, not a prediction of whether an individual repair will succeed.
Inside, pulling on the cable instead of releasing its spring contacts with a spudger can rip the flex cable. If the glass begins to crack, the cable is difficult to access, or you cannot confidently separate adhesive without force, stop rather than escalating pressure.
