Samsung documents Smart Switch backups to a computer and to external USB storage, but neither route is guaranteed for every S6 with a broken power button.
If the phone is off, locked, or cannot be operated, the documented backup routes may not be available. Avoid reset or firmware-flashing steps when your priority is preserving local data.
How to back up a Galaxy S6 that is still on
- Keep the phone powered. Charge it if needed, and avoid restarting or switching it off while it is working. With a nonfunctional power key, losing power may leave you unable to start the phone again.
- Try Smart Switch on a computer. Install and open Samsung Smart Switch on a PC or Mac, connect the S6 with a data-capable USB cable, and follow the backup prompts shown in the app. Samsung describes this as a general Galaxy backup workflow; recognition and backup on a particular S6 with a broken key are not confirmed. See Samsung’s PC/Mac Smart Switch instructions.
- Check the backup. Inspect the saved files and content that matter to you before relying on the backup. The available Samsung guidance does not establish that every app’s private data or protected content will be included.
Back up to external USB storage instead
Samsung also documents using Smart Switch to back up content to a USB flash drive or SSD connected to a Galaxy device’s charging port. You may need a micro-USB OTG adapter to connect the storage device. Follow the on-screen Smart Switch prompts to select and back up content; see Samsung’s external-storage instructions.
This is general Galaxy guidance, not a verified guarantee for every Galaxy S6. Success depends on the S6 variant and software, a working charging port, and compatible storage, cable, and adapter. Check the resulting backup rather than assuming all content was copied.

What if the phone is locked, unusable, or off?
The phone is on but locked or the screen cannot be used
The official guidance cited here does not establish that a locked phone can be authorized for backup or that files can be accessed when the screen is unusable. Connecting USB does not automatically bypass the lock. Do not assume Smart Switch will be able to retrieve the data in this state.
The phone is off and the power key does not work
No universal, officially documented button-free startup method for all Galaxy S6 variants is established here. A computer or OTG adapter should not be treated as a way to start a phone that is off. Seek repair advice that prioritizes preserving the existing data, and ask about data preservation before authorizing work; recovery is not guaranteed.

The USB port or charging connection is faulty
Neither the computer nor external-storage route can be assumed to work through a failed port. The Galaxy S6 support page provides model support materials, but it does not establish a button-free backup procedure: Samsung Galaxy S6 support.
Choose the route your phone can actually use

Avoid steps that can erase local data
If preserving the files is the goal, do not factory reset the phone or flash firmware as a troubleshooting shortcut. If Smart Switch cannot back it up and the device cannot be operated, stop before taking steps that might erase data and ask for data-preserving repair advice.
