Managed WordPress hosting can take some update and server work off your hands, but it does not automatically secure every part of a WordPress site. WordPress itself can automatically apply most minor and security core updates on either hosting type. Plugin and theme updates, server maintenance, monitoring, backups, and recovery depend on the host’s specific plan and on who is operating the site.
Choose based on the actual division of work: what the provider updates, what it monitors, how it reports failures, and how you can restore the site—not just whether the plan is labeled “managed.”
What managed and self-managed hosting mean for security updates
With managed WordPress hosting, the provider takes on some operational tasks. Depending on the plan, those may include server maintenance, WordPress updates, backups, or related support. There is no universal set of services implied by the word “managed.” WordPress’s hosting guide notes that WordPress-specific providers may offer updates and backups, so verify the features and limits of the plan you are considering: WordPress hosting.
With self-managed hosting, you arrange or perform more of that work yourself, though a host may still maintain the underlying server infrastructure. The relevant distinction is not simply who owns the server: it is who is responsible for each layer, who checks that updates succeeded, and who can recover the site if one causes a problem.

WordPress puts the boundary plainly: “It’s easy to look at web hosts and pass the responsibility of security to them, but there is a tremendous amount of security that lies on the website owner as well.” — WordPress Developer Resources, Hardening WordPress.
Which parts of WordPress update automatically?
WordPress core
WordPress can automatically apply minor and security updates to core on most installations. This mechanism is built into WordPress; it is not exclusive to managed hosting. Check the site’s update status rather than assuming the setting is active and working: WordPress automatic background updates documentation.

Version support matters, too. WordPress.org says, “The only current officially supported version is the last major release of WordPress.” Older versions may receive security backports as a courtesy, but those backports are not guaranteed or provided on a fixed schedule. Keep the site on the current supported major release: WordPress supported versions.
Plugins and themes
Plugins and themes have separate automatic-update controls. WordPress administrators can review them in the dashboard, but a host or plugin may disable or affect those controls. Scheduled updates also depend on WordPress Cron; if scheduled tasks are not running reliably, updates may not happen as expected. WordPress’s documentation recommends regular backups when enabling plugin and theme auto-updates: Managing automatic updates for plugins and themes.

Server software and configuration are a separate responsibility from WordPress core, plugins, and themes. Some settings are managed at the server level, where the hosting provider may control them. Ask who maintains server software and handles server-side configuration rather than assuming a WordPress update feature covers infrastructure.
Compare the responsibility, not just the hosting label
Use the same questions for every plan or operating arrangement. Get specific answers about what is automatic, what is reviewed by a person, how failures are surfaced, and what remains your responsibility.

| Area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| WordPress core | Is automatic minor and security updating enabled and functioning? Who checks update failures? |
| Plugins and themes | Are automatic updates available and enabled? Who reviews compatibility, handles failures, and manages exceptions? |
| Backups and recovery | What is backed up, how often, for how long, and who can restore it? Is the restore process workable for this site? |
| Server maintenance | Who updates server software and manages server-level configuration? |
| Support boundary | Which problems will the provider handle, and which application-security tasks remain with the site owner? |
| WordPress version | Who keeps the site on the current officially supported major release? |
WordPress-specific hosts may include useful operational features, but their scope varies by provider and plan. Confirm the terms directly; general hosting descriptions do not establish what a particular service includes.
Backups are part of update safety
An automatic update can save routine effort, but it does not eliminate the possibility of a compatibility problem. WordPress recommends regular backups when enabling plugin and theme auto-updates. Before relying on a backup, establish what it contains, how to access it, and how to restore the site to a usable state. A backup that cannot be restored when needed is not a complete recovery plan.
Ask the host who initiates and performs a restore, whether you can do it yourself, and what the process covers. If the plan does not provide a suitable recovery workflow, decide who will provide and maintain one.

- Review core: In the WordPress dashboard, open Dashboard > Updates and check the installed version and available updates. Confirm with the provider whether its own update controls affect the site.
- Review plugins and themes: Open the Plugins and Themes screens and inspect automatic-update settings. Note any controls that are unavailable or disabled, and ask whether host or plugin configuration is responsible.
- Check site health and scheduled tasks: Open Tools > Site Health and review any reported issues relevant to updates or scheduled events. WordPress Cron is involved in scheduled updates, so unresolved scheduling problems may affect them.
- Confirm recovery: Find the backup and restore instructions for the site. Establish what is included and who can carry out a restore before relying on automatic updates.
- Assign ongoing ownership: Name the person or provider who monitors update notices and failures, reviews exceptions, and keeps the site on a supported major release.
Which approach fits your site?
Managed hosting is a better fit when you need operational help
Managed hosting can be useful when you want a provider to handle defined maintenance tasks or need access to its backup, update, or support processes. It is a good fit only when those services match your needs and the provider makes its limits clear. Confirm whether the plan covers core, plugins, themes, and server software separately; whether updates are automatic or reviewed; and what happens when one fails.
Self-managed hosting is viable when someone owns the work
Self-management can work when you or a trusted administrator can monitor update notices, verify scheduled updates, keep appropriate backups, and maintain the site on a supported WordPress release. The lower level of provider involvement does not make those tasks optional; it means you need a clear owner and a recovery route.
Quick Recap
Questions to ask before choosing a plan
- Does the plan update WordPress core, plugins, themes, server software, or only some of them?
- Are updates applied automatically, reviewed first, or handled differently for different components?
- How are failed updates or compatibility problems reported, and who is expected to act?
- What does the backup cover, how frequently is it made, how long is it retained, and who can restore the site?
- Which security and maintenance responsibilities remain with the site owner?
- How does the provider support sites running an older WordPress major version, given that older-branch security support is not guaranteed?
