Start with the streaming service’s exact error message: a VPN or proxy warning, a location mismatch, and a plan restriction can look similar but call for different fixes. For Netflix, check whether a VPN is active, confirm that your plan and content support VPN use, then work through device, network, and ISP checks. Other services may apply different policies, so use their own support guidance for service-specific errors.
1. Identify the error and the streaming service
Write down the exact message or error code before changing settings. Netflix identifies “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy,” the E106/proxy message, and M7037-1111 as VPN- or proxy-related. See Netflix’s VPN or proxy troubleshooting guidance and its M7037-1111 help page.
Do not assume another service uses Netflix’s rules or error codes. Look up the exact message in that service’s help center first; a location or playback error may have a different cause.
2. Check whether a VPN or proxy is active
Check the VPN app on the affected device, and check antivirus or security software as well. Netflix notes that these products may include an active VPN. If a VPN or proxy is on, disconnect it and try the stream again. This is a useful diagnostic check, not a promise that every service will work with the VPN turned off.

Netflix also recommends checking the connection on the same network as the affected device: open fast.com, select “Show more info,” and look at the country listed next to “Client.” If it differs from your actual location, that suggests a VPN may be active. Treat this as a clue, not proof of which app or setting caused the mismatch.
3. Check the plan and content restrictions
For Netflix, VPN use is not supported for live events or the ad-supported experience, according to its help guidance. If you use an ad-free plan and still see the warning, continue with the network checks below. Policies can change, so confirm the current rules for the specific service, plan, and content you are trying to watch.

4. Work through Netflix’s device and network checks
If the warning remains, follow Netflix’s recommended sequence and test playback after each change. Doing one step at a time helps identify where the problem lies.
- Try with the VPN off. Disconnect the VPN and retry Netflix.
- Reset the affected device’s network settings. Use the device maker’s instructions, then reconnect and test Netflix.
- Restore modem or router defaults only if needed. Netflix recommends this as a later network step. A reset can erase custom Wi-Fi, DNS, or other network settings, so make sure you know how to restore them or can get help from your ISP or device provider.

5. Use targeted VPN-app checks if the problem appears limited to the VPN
If the service works without the VPN, or the issue affects only one browser or device, try reversible software checks. Proton VPN recommends the following in its provider-authored streaming troubleshooting guide. These suggestions may not apply to every VPN, platform, or streaming service, and they do not guarantee access.
- Restart the VPN app and device, and update the VPN, streaming, and browser apps.
- Try a different nearby VPN server with a lower load, or change the VPN protocol.
- Clear browser cookies and cache, or the device’s DNS cache; test in a private or incognito window.
- Disable proxy, ad-blocker, or video-downloader browser extensions temporarily.
- Check for IP or DNS leaks using the VPN provider’s guidance.
- Confirm that your streaming subscription is active, and try signing in to the streaming service before connecting to the VPN.
- On iOS, check whether location services affect the app. Proton also notes that some services may be sensitive to a device time-zone mismatch, citing Channel 4 as an example.
6. Ask your ISP about the IP address and DNS
If Netflix still reports a VPN or proxy after you have checked the VPN and device, gather connection details on the same network as the affected device. On fast.com, select “Show more info” and note the “Client” country and IP address. Then ask your ISP whether those details match your home connection and whether your device is using the ISP’s DNS server.

Netflix says that if the country and IP match the home connection, or the device is already using the ISP’s DNS, the ISP may need to work directly with Netflix. If you are not using the ISP’s DNS, ask the ISP how to switch to it, then restart the Netflix app. See Netflix’s VPN/proxy instructions and M7037-1111 guidance.

A streaming service can sometimes associate an IP address with VPN or proxy use even when you are not running a VPN. Netflix Open Connect says a VPN/proxy warning or missing regional content can indicate that an IP address has been flagged for potential VPN or proxy misuse. Its guidance is aimed at network operators: IP address registration with the Regional Internet Registry may need correction by the operator or its upstream address provider.

As a household subscriber, do not try to change registry records yourself. Raise the issue with your ISP and share the error and the connection details you collected. Netflix says its systems may take two weeks or longer to discover IP allocation changes; that is an operational estimate from Netflix Open Connect’s usage guidance, not a typical repair time or a guarantee of resolution.
