What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Duplicate finders use filenames, file sizes, or file contents as comparison signals—but those signals do not mean the same thing. A matching name or byte length identifies a candidate, not necessarily an identical file. Comparing content with a hash can find identical files even when their names differ; some tools also offer byte-by-byte confirmation.
What each comparison method actually tells you
Name matching: same label, not necessarily same file
A name-based search compares labels according to the selected tool’s rules. Strict matching may require the same filename, while other modes can ignore case, extensions, whitespace, punctuation, word order, digits, or copy markers such as “(2)” and “Copy of.” The result depends on those settings.
Files with the same name may contain different data, especially if one was edited after being copied. Name-only searches can help locate such files, but a name match is not proof of identical contents. Conversely, files with different names can still have identical contents.
Size matching: equal byte counts, not equal contents
File size is the number of bytes in a file. Different byte lengths rule out an exact byte-for-byte match, so size is a quick way to narrow a search. Equal byte lengths, however, do not show that the bytes themselves match. A size-only search finds files of the same size, not necessarily duplicates by content.

Content matching: compare data, not labels
A content-based finder computes a checksum or hash—a compact fingerprint—from file data, then compares the results. This can group files with different names and paths when their content matches. Hash algorithms and verification options vary by product, so a hash match should not automatically be described as a mathematical guarantee that every byte is identical.
Some tools offer optional byte-by-byte confirmation after hashes match. For example, Duplicate File Detective documents an optional byte-for-byte confirmation setting and describes it as validating matches at the binary level. That is a feature of that product and setting, not a universal step performed by every duplicate finder.

Why many tools check size before hashing
Reading file contents to calculate hashes generally takes more work than comparing names or recorded sizes. A common workflow is therefore to group or filter files by size first, then hash equal-size candidates. Files with different lengths can be excluded from an exact byte-for-byte comparison without reading and hashing all of their contents.
The sequence is not identical in every product. Everything documents the comparison mode dupe:size;sha256: it compares sizes first and then calculates SHA-256 for equal-size files, warning that calculating the hash takes a long time. Directory Opus describes comparing sizes before calculating MD5 for files of matching size. Czkawka describes equal-size grouping followed by prehash and full-hash stages. These are documented implementations, not a guarantee that all tools follow the same pipeline.

How to compare duplicate-finder options
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Name rules | Exact matching, case handling, extension handling, punctuation or whitespace normalization, and copy-suffix handling determine which labels are grouped. Broad matching may surface unrelated files with similar names. |
| Role of size | Find out whether equal size is a standalone search mode or only a filter before content comparison. Equal byte length is not content confirmation. |
| Content algorithm and scope | Check which hash or checksum is used and whether the tool hashes full files or offers a configurable partial hash. The documented method affects how results are produced and may affect speed or confidence. |
| Verification | Check whether the tool can compare matching files byte by byte after a hash match. This tells you what level of confirmation that tool offers. |
| Specialized matching | Audio tags, image metadata, document properties, archive contents, or perceptual image comparison can identify related items whose bytes differ. These are not the same as exact byte-duplicate detection. |
| Runtime approach | Check what data the tool reads and whether it uses caching, prehashing, or partial hashing. Content comparison involves more work than a simple name check, but actual runtime depends on the tool and the files being scanned. |
Exact duplicates versus similar or related files
Some programs compare metadata or characteristics beyond filenames, sizes, and full-content hashes. Duplicate File Detective documents audio-tag, image-metadata, and document-property modes. These can help surface related files even when the underlying bytes differ—for example, re-encoded music that represents the same recording, or an image or document re-saved with changed metadata.
Perceptual image matching is also distinct from ordinary checksum matching: it can identify visual similarity rather than identical file data. Treat results from these specialized modes as related or similar items under the selected rules, not automatically as byte-identical duplicates.

Review results before removing or deduplicating files
Before taking action, confirm which comparison mode produced each result and review the files you intend to change. A same-name or same-size result may contain different data, while a metadata or perceptual match is intended to find related items rather than prove byte identity.
Also check what the chosen cleanup operation does. Deleting a file removes it; replacing files with links changes how they refer to stored data. TreeSize’s documentation explains that hard links share the same underlying file record on a partition, so changes made through one hard link affect the shared data. Do not treat a bulk cleanup action as interchangeable with a comparison result.

What the documentation can—and cannot—tell you about speed
Vendor manuals describe directional trade-offs, not a universal runtime. TreeSize says its File Content comparison is more accurate than comparing by name, size, and date, but slower. Everything warns that SHA-256 calculation takes a long time. Those statements describe the respective products; they are not independent cross-tool benchmarks. There is no basis here for a general files-per-second figure or a fixed speed ratio.
For background on individual implementations, see the TreeSize manual, Everything support documentation, Duplicate File Detective comparison options help, and Czkawka documentation.
