There is no universal winner. Cable may suit households that want a provider-supplied channel package, while internet-delivered TV can offer more flexibility—but it depends on the broadband connection, the exact channels, and the full recurring cost. Compare what each option actually delivers at your address, not just the service label or advertised price.
What “IPTV” means—and why labels can be confusing
IPTV means television delivered using internet protocol, but consumer services marketed with that label do not all work the same way. The FCC distinguishes traditional multichannel video providers from virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs): vMVPDs sell subscription packages of live, linear channels over the internet. Some traditional providers also make channels and on-demand programming available online. The FCC’s 2024 Communications Marketplace Report describes these overlapping arrangements.
“Streaming” is also a broad term. Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) explains that streaming transmits video from a server, usually over broadband, and may include either on-demand or live video. That is a useful consumer explanation, not a nationwide regulatory definition. Connecticut PURA’s cable FAQ also distinguishes streaming from cable service.
For a practical comparison, ask two questions: how does the provider deliver the service, and what does the specific package include? Do not assume that everything called IPTV is a licensed service or that internet delivery automatically means a particular channel lineup.

How cable, live-TV streaming, and on-demand services differ
| Option | What you receive | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cable TV | A provider’s multichannel television package; some cable providers also offer channels and on-demand programs online. | Address availability, included channels, equipment, bundle details, fees, promotional period, and the price after it ends. |
| Internet-delivered live-TV package (often called a vMVPD) | A subscription package of live linear channels delivered over the internet. | Whether the local and premium channels you watch are included, broadband requirements, supported devices, simultaneous-use rules, and total monthly cost. |
| On-demand streaming service | Video selected from a service’s catalog; the catalog and any live offerings depend on the service. | Whether it has the shows, films, or live programming you want, the subscription terms, app support, and whether you need additional services for other content. |
The rows describe broad categories, not guarantees about a particular provider. Channel availability, features, and terms vary by service and location. The FCC notes that video service availability can vary geographically and that not every device works with every service. Its video competition report discusses these availability and compatibility issues.
Compare the full monthly cost, not just the TV price
Internet-delivered television needs a suitable internet connection. If you do not already pay for broadband, include a broadband plan in the comparison. If you do, consider whether the connection and data allowance are suitable for everyone’s use in the household. A streaming subscription by itself is not a fair comparison with a cable bundle that includes other services.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Write down recurring charges: TV subscription, broadband, equipment rental or purchase, and any applicable taxes or fees.
- Separate introductory pricing from the ongoing price: Record when a promotion ends and what the provider says the price will be afterward.
- Check what is bundled: Compare like with like. If one offer includes internet or phone service and another does not, account for the services you would still need to buy separately.
- Review broadband details: Compare the plan’s price, introductory rate, data allowance, and performance information. These are among the items addressed in the FCC’s broadband-label transparency materials. The 2022 Federal Register summary records the rule’s effective date and notes that compliance with specified amendments was delayed indefinitely; it should not be read as establishing the current compliance status of every provision.
- Check cancellation and contract terms: Ask about contract length, early-termination charges, equipment return, and how to cancel before signing up.
Streaming is not automatically cheaper than cable. The FCC’s 2024 report says broadband has generated more revenue than video for cable multichannel providers since 2020 and that traditional channel bundles have become less prominent. That is a market trend, not evidence that a particular household will save by switching. The report’s cited market snapshot is from the end of 2023.
Check channels, availability, and devices before choosing
Confirm the exact channel lineup
Make a list of the channels and types of programming your household actually watches—especially local stations, sports, news, and premium channels. Compare that list with the package’s current lineup for your location. A service category or national channel list does not establish that a particular local channel is available at your address.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Verify service at your address
Ask each provider to check your exact service address. Availability can differ by geography, and online channel or package descriptions may not tell you whether a service can be activated where you live.
Check every viewing device
Confirm that the service’s app works on the televisions, phones, tablets, or streaming devices your household plans to use. A streaming media player or stick can bring supported internet video services to a TV, but it does not provide broadband or a subscription. Check app compatibility and your television’s available inputs before buying a device. The FCC describes the streaming-player category and cautions that device and service compatibility varies. Who is each option likely to suit?
- Cable may fit if it is available at your address, its channel lineup matches your household’s needs, and the complete price—including any bundle, equipment, and fees—is acceptable.
- A live-TV streaming package may fit if you want a package of live channels, have suitable broadband, and have verified local-channel coverage, device support, and the full cost.
- On-demand streaming may fit if your priority is choosing programs from catalogs rather than receiving a particular live-channel lineup. Check whether you would need multiple subscriptions to cover your household’s viewing.
- A mix may fit if no single service covers everything you watch. Add up the combined subscriptions and broadband rather than assuming several smaller services cost less than one package.
A practical comparison checklist
- List the channels, live events, and on-demand programs your household considers essential.
- Check cable and internet-delivered services for availability at your exact address.
- Compare the actual package lineups, including local and premium channels.
- Confirm compatible apps and devices for each person who will watch.
- Add the recurring TV, broadband, equipment, tax, and fee costs; note introductory and post-promotion prices separately.
- Read the contract, cancellation, and equipment-return terms before ordering.
Use authorized services and know where to raise billing issues
