Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst identify when the unexpected page appears: at startup, in a new window, in every new tab, or alongside tabs from an earlier session. Firefox treats those as separate behaviors, so the right fix depends on the symptom—not on assuming the homepage itself has changed.
First, identify what Firefox is opening
Firefox’s homepage is the page shown when you open Firefox, open a new window, or click the Home button. By default, that is Firefox’s New Tab page. The page shown when you open a new tab is a separate setting. Mozilla’s homepage instructions explain the homepage setting; its extension guidance distinguishes it from New Tab behavior.
Open Settings > Home (in some versions, look for Home and startup or New Windows and Tabs). Check both the homepage/new-window option and the New tabs option. The Home button may not be visible in the toolbar; you can still change its behavior in Settings.
- Unexpected page when Firefox starts or a new window opens: check the homepage and startup settings.
- Unexpected content in every new tab: check the New tabs setting and whether an extension controls it.
- Old windows or tabs return at launch: check session restore, which is distinct from the homepage.
- Your chosen setting looks right but changes after restarting: investigate whether Firefox can save preferences.
If an extension changed the homepage or New Tab page
Some extensions can control the homepage or New Tab page. Firefox identifies a controlling extension in the Home settings; the fact that an extension is listed does not by itself mean it is malicious. Mozilla says Firefox asks for approval the first time an extension takes control.

Mozilla’s instructions for extensions that change the home page or New Tab page describe the indicator and reset option.
If previous tabs reappear at startup
Firefox can reopen the previous browsing session. That can make it look as though the homepage has changed or that Firefox is opening several pages, even when the homepage setting is correct. Check Settings > General > Startup and whether Open previous windows and tabs is enabled. Turn it off if you want Firefox to start without restoring that session. See Mozilla’s session-restore guidance.

If instead several specific pages open on every launch, inspect the homepage field in Settings > Home: it may contain multiple entries. Session restore and multiple homepage entries are different causes, so check which pages appear and whether they were open in your last session.
If the setting changes back after you restart Firefox
If your chosen homepage or startup preference does not survive closing and reopening Firefox, Firefox may not be saving the setting. Follow Mozilla’s troubleshooting for preferences that won’t save before changing profile files or using cleanup tools.

Mozilla’s homepage help also points to cases where a startup shortcut contains a link that launches an unexpected page. If the saved homepage is correct but the same unexpected page still opens from your usual launch point, inspect the Firefox shortcut using Mozilla’s shortcut-specific instructions. The steps depend on how Firefox is launched, so use the instructions for your situation rather than assuming every operating system handles shortcuts the same way.
An older Mozilla Support forum response also names an optional user.js file, security or utility software that protects homepage settings, and unwanted add-ons or malware as possible leads when preferences will not save. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis. Do not delete profile files or install a repair tool based on the symptom alone; start with Mozilla’s current preference-saving steps and investigate further only if they point to a specific cause.

If “Firefox Updated” appears every time Firefox starts
Check whether the Firefox Updated page address has been entered in the homepage field. If it has, remove that entry and set the homepage you actually want. If it has not, Firefox may be failing to save the preference that marks the update notice as seen; use the same preference-saving troubleshooting steps. Mozilla discusses this symptom in its repeated update-notice guidance.

A changed page alone does not establish that your device has malware. First check Firefox’s page settings, the extension indicator, session restore, preference-saving behavior, and the launch shortcut. If you find an extension you did not choose or other concrete signs of unwanted software, use Mozilla’s guidance for a hijacked homepage or search settings and follow the steps that match what you found.
