Use a Python one-liner when it expresses one small, immediately clear idea. When it combines operations, nests conditions, hides side effects, or needs a comment to explain itself, expand it into a normal indented block. Python may allow a compact form, but valid syntax is not automatically readable style.

When is a Python one-liner readable?

A one-liner is useful when its brevity makes a small transformation or simple choice easy to see at a glance. It becomes a maintenance cost when readers must mentally unpack several actions or control-flow decisions before they can tell what the code does.

For example, a straightforward conditional expression is compact without concealing much:

label = "ready" if ready else "waiting"

By contrast, a condition that selects among several cases is easier to follow when each branch is visible:

if status == "ready":
    label = "ready"
elif status == "paused":
    label = "waiting"
else:
    label = "unknown"

These examples illustrate style choices, not performance differences. Fewer lines do not by themselves make code easier to maintain.

What Python permits versus what style guides recommend

Python’s language reference allows a compound statement to put a suite of simple statements after its header on one line, separated by semicolons. It also notes that simple forms of compound statements can fit on one line. That describes valid syntax, not a recommendation to compress code.

PEP 8 says compound statements on one line are generally discouraged. It allows that a short if, for, or while body may sometimes fit on the header line, but says not to do this with multi-clause statements and warns against folding long lines.

For example, this small form may be acceptable in a codebase whose conventions allow it:

if ready: start()

Make the control flow explicit when it contains multiple actions or deserves visibility during review:

if ready:
    start()
    log()

Although Python syntax permits the semicolon-separated statements in if ready: start(); log(), PEP 8 generally discourages multiple statements on one line. Google’s Python Style Guide is stricter: it says not to use semicolons to put two statements on the same line.

Use def for named functions, not assigned lambdas

Use a lambda when an immediate, small function expression is useful—for example, as a short argument to another operation. If the function needs a name, PEP 8 recommends writing a def instead of assigning a lambda to an identifier. A named function is more useful in tracebacks and string representations.

# Prefer this for a function with a lasting name
def normalize_name(name):
    return name.strip().lower()

The decision is not about line count: use the form that gives the function a clear identity and makes its behavior easier to inspect.

Apply your project’s conventions consistently

PEP 8 says project-specific style rules take precedence when they conflict with it. Its consistency guidance prioritizes the project, then the module, then the function. In practice, match the conventions already used in the code you are changing rather than introducing a different compression style for one line.

Line length is also a convention, not a Python syntax limit. The Python 3.14.8 tutorial’s PEP 8 summary gives 79 characters; Google’s Python Style Guide uses 80 characters with exceptions. These are documented guide-specific policies, not universal thresholds at which maintainability changes. Follow the applicable project guide.

A quick decision checklist

  • Keep it compact if it expresses one small operation or a clear choice without requiring explanation.
  • Expand it if it combines several operations, nests conditions, or makes important side effects easy to miss.
  • Avoid semicolon chains as a way to reduce line count; they obscure the separation between actions and conflict with common style guidance.
  • Use a named def when a function has a lasting name rather than assigning a lambda to an identifier.
  • Follow the local guide for one-line control flow and line length, and keep style consistent within the project and the code you are editing.

As Tim Peters’s PEP 20 aphorism puts it: “Readability counts.”
