For routine dust, fingerprints, and light dirt, gently wipe a titanium watch case with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Use water, soap, or a brush only if the instructions for your exact watch allow it: titanium does not make the assembled watch safe to rinse or soak, and its finish may be coated or easy to mark.

Start with the safest cleaning method

Check the watch’s manual for its case finish, coating, water-resistance guidance, and cleaning instructions. If you cannot confirm the finish or whether wet cleaning is permitted, keep the cleaning dry.

  1. Wipe the case: Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and gentle pressure. Garmin recommends this type of cloth for titanium bands; its guidance also warns that titanium can scratch. Garmin’s titanium wear and scratch guidance.
  2. Check crevices: Use a soft-bristled brush only if the model’s instructions permit brushing and any specified moisture. Advice differs by maker: Certina and Panerai describe mild soapy water and soft-brush cleaning for certain suitable watches, while TAG Heuer advises against soap and immersion.
  3. Dry it: If the maker permits wet cleaning, close the crown and pushers as directed, use only the recommended water and cleaning agent, and rinse or wipe as instructed. Dry the watch thoroughly with a soft cloth.

When wet cleaning is safe—and when it is not

Water resistance applies to the individual assembled watch, not to titanium as a material. Seals can age, and damage to seals or controls can compromise resistance. Follow the manual for your model and keep the crown and pushers in the required closed position; do not operate them underwater. Do not assume a water-resistance rating means soap, brushing, rinsing, or immersion is allowed.

Manufacturer instructions vary. Some makers recommend fresh-water rinsing after saltwater exposure for suitable water-resistant watches; others set stricter limits on soap or immersion. Follow your model’s directions rather than applying another brand’s routine. Victorinox’s watch FAQ, Panerai’s care advice, and Audemars Piguet’s care tips provide examples of maker-specific guidance.

Choose the method that fits the case

Method When it fits Limit
Dry, soft lint-free cloth Routine dust, fingerprints, or light surface dirt; best default when water instructions are unknown May not reach grime in crevices
Slightly damp cloth or soft brush Only when the exact model’s manufacturer permits it Some makers prohibit soap or immersion, and water resistance may have deteriorated
Mild soapy water and soft brush Only for cases or titanium bracelets whose instructions explicitly allow it Not a universal method; rinse and dry only as directed
Professional service or refinishing Coating damage, stubborn contamination, or specialist inspection and cleaning Use the manufacturer or a suitable authorized provider

Protect the finish and handle scratches carefully

“Titanium” does not identify one uniform surface. Bare, brushed, polished, and DLC-coated titanium can require different care. Garmin says titanium is softer than stainless steel and may scratch or scuff; DLC is more wear-resistant but can still show wear. The same guidance advises against metal polish and abrasives because they can damage cosmetic finishes. Do not use abrasive pads, rotary tools, or polishing compounds on an unknown or coated case.

Garmin says an uncoated titanium band may be taken to a jeweler or jewelry repair shop for refinishing, but does not recommend attempting to repair or refinish DLC-coated pieces. That guidance concerns Garmin products and should not be treated as a universal refinishing rule for every watch. Audemars Piguet notes that polishing may be requested as part of complete maintenance, should be done only a limited number of times, and does not prevent natural patina; this is brand guidance, not a rule for all titanium cases.

For complete maintenance, including specialist cleaning and functional inspection, TAG Heuer directs owners to its official service centers. Refer to your own maker for coating damage or refinishing options.

Account for the bracelet and other attached materials

A titanium case, titanium bracelet, and attached strap may have different cleaning requirements. Leather, rubber, and fabric straps are not covered by the case’s care instructions. Check the guidance for each material, and do not wet the whole watch merely because one component is titanium.

Bottom line

Use a soft, lint-free cloth first. Move to moisture, soap, or brushing only when the exact watch’s maker permits that method, and leave coating repair or specialist cleaning to an appropriate service provider.
