If your household wants a shared smart-home screen, the best alternative depends on the system you already use: choose Home Assistant dashboards for a customizable tablet view, or Apple’s Home app for straightforward room and accessory control. HomePad itself supports either Apple Home or Home Assistant, but it is a dedicated dashboard app rather than a required part of either platform.
Which HomePad alternative fits your household?
| Option | Best fit | Shared-screen customization | Household and guest access | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant dashboards | Homes already running Home Assistant that want a tailored tablet or guest view. | Visual drag-and-drop dashboard customization; the documentation suggests separate kitchen-tablet, guest, and personal views. | A guest-focused dashboard is documented as a layout option; the cited dashboard documentation does not detail account or permission administration. | An existing Home Assistant setup. The documentation does not say every household needs new host hardware. |
| Apple Home app | Apple-centered homes that want built-in control of compatible accessories without a separate dashboard layer. | Organizes rooms and favorites, but Apple’s cited page does not describe a custom wall-dashboard builder. | Guests can receive permissions for selected locks, garage doors, and alarm systems. | Compatible accessories and Apple devices. A HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV configured as a home hub enables away-from-home access and automations. |
These are platform-level alternatives, not a verified ranking of every third-party HomeKit dashboard app. No comparative setup or usability testing establishes one universal winner.
Home Assistant dashboards: the flexible alternative
Home Assistant describes a dashboard as the at-a-glance view shown in its app or website. It can be generated from devices in the system, then customized visually: “From there, you can build your own dashboards visually, with drag and drop, no coding required.” Home Assistant’s dashboard documentation specifically suggests a focused kitchen-tablet view, a simple view for guests, and a detailed personal view.
When to choose it
- Your household already uses Home Assistant and wants to decide what appears on a shared screen.
- You want different views for a kitchen tablet, guests, and individual users.
- You prefer configuring the display inside the platform you already maintain rather than adding another dashboard app.
What to consider
The cited dashboard guide establishes layout customization, not a complete guide to household accounts or access permissions. A simple guest dashboard is not automatically the same thing as restricting which people can control particular devices. Check Home Assistant’s user and permission settings separately if access control is central to your decision.

- Crystal-clear video calls: Video calls feel natural on the vibrant 11" screen with a centered, auto-framing camera, 3.3x zoom, and noise reduction technology. Use live view to check in on your family, pets, and more while you're away.
Apple Home: the simpler built-in option
Apple’s Home app provides a standard way to control compatible accessories across Apple devices. Its Home tab groups rooms and favorite accessories; Apple also says users can view up to four cameras at once and grant guests permissions for door locks, garage doors, and alarm systems. See Apple’s Home app guide for its described controls.
When to choose it
- Your household already manages compatible devices in Apple Home and its room-and-favorites organization is enough.
- You need Apple’s documented guest permissions for supported locks, garage doors, or alarms.
- You want to avoid building a custom dashboard when the standard Home interface meets the need.
Where it differs from a dedicated dashboard
Apple’s cited documentation covers rooms, favorites, cameras, and guest permissions; it does not describe the Home app as a configurable wall-dashboard builder. A Home hub—HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV configured as one—is required for the away-from-home access and automations Apple describes.

HomePad still makes sense when you want a dedicated iPad display
HomePad by Luminae is an iPad and iPhone dashboard that connects to either Apple Home/HomeKit or Home Assistant. Its vendor says you choose the source and can switch it in settings. The described dashboard has movable and resizable tiles for accessories, scenes, Shortcuts, weather, and media; it also describes room pages based on rooms in the selected system, detailed accessory controls, camera access, music, and an idle clock or photo mode. These are vendor-described features, not independent test results. See the HomePad product page.
The US App Store listing describes a customizable shared dashboard, camera feeds, sensors, media, photo-frame mode, and iPad HomeKit functionality. It lists iPadOS 17.6 or later, a one-time purchase, and Family Sharing for up to six family members; availability and price vary by store region and may change. HomePad’s vendor says the app has no subscription or account and communicates directly with accessories on the home network, or with the Home Assistant remote address the user already owns. It positions a plugged-in, wall-mounted iPad as a use case; the mount is optional, and the vendor lists iPadOS 17.6 or later as a requirement. Verify the tablet model and case fit before choosing a mount. Details are on the HomePad wall-mount page.

- Start with your platform. If you already run Home Assistant and want to compose a dedicated shared view, try its dashboards. If your household is organized around Apple Home and standard controls suffice, start with the Home app.
- Decide whether the screen needs a custom layout. Home Assistant explicitly documents tailored tablet and guest views; HomePad describes a configurable tile grid. Apple documents rooms, favorites, camera viewing, and guest permissions, not the same kind of dashboard customization.
- Separate layout from access control. A simplified guest view is not evidence of restricted permissions. Apple explicitly describes guest permissions for selected categories; the cited Home Assistant dashboard page does not describe comparable permission administration.
- Choose the physical display last. Home Assistant documents a kitchen tablet as a use case, while HomePad is positioned for a mounted iPad. A mount is an optional accessory, not a prerequisite for either platform’s dashboard.
Actual setup and maintenance depend on the devices, integrations, and the person responsible for the home system. Home Assistant is most compelling when it is already in place; starting from scratch may add setup work, but the cited documentation does not establish a need to purchase new host hardware.
