For a simple setup, choose a camera that records to a compatible microSD card. For several cameras, continuous recording, or room to expand, consider a wired DVR or NVR with a local hard drive. In either case, check the exact model’s recording modes, what it does when the internet is down, and whether remote app access or alerts still require a connection or account.
Choose where the footage will be stored
“Local recording” can mean storage inside the camera, in a separate hub, or on a recorder and hard drive kept at home. Those arrangements differ in capacity, wiring, setup, and how easily you can add cameras. Decide on the storage location first, then verify the specific camera and recorder support it.
Camera with a microSD card
A microSD camera is often the straightforward choice for one camera or a small setup. Check the product’s official specifications for supported card type and maximum capacity, whether the card is included, and whether the camera can record continuously, only when it detects events, or both. These details vary by model; Wyze’s local-storage model list, for example, includes exceptions rather than applying to every camera in its range: Wyze’s current local-storage compatibility list.
Camera hub or base station
A hub can centralize recordings while reducing the need to run a separate recorder cable to every camera. Support is system-specific, however. Confirm that the exact camera works with the hub, where recordings are stored, what storage capacity it accepts, and whether recording, playback, or backup depends on an internet connection or account. Do not assume a hub is compatible just because it is sold by the same brand.

Wired DVR
A DVR is generally the fit for a traditional system using coaxial camera cabling. Swann explains that its DVR systems record to a local hard drive and can support continuous or motion-based recording; camera compatibility and installation details still depend on the system: Swann’s guide to choosing a security system.
Wired NVR with IP cameras
An NVR is generally intended for IP cameras connected over Ethernet. It can suit several cameras, continuous recording, or a setup you expect to expand. Check that the cameras and recorder are compatible, whether the system supports power over Ethernet (PoE), and what cabling and network setup are required. Swann describes both DVR and NVR systems as local-hard-drive options, but they are not interchangeable simply because both record video.

Separate recording from Wi-Fi, internet, and remote access
A camera may be able to save footage locally even when its internet connection is unavailable, but that does not mean every function will work. Local recording, live viewing, notifications, and remote playback are separate capabilities. Remote access through an app requires a connection, and the exact behavior during an outage depends on the model and system. Tapo’s guidance likewise distinguishes local recording from viewing footage remotely: Tapo’s guide to cameras without Wi-Fi.
Before buying, find the manufacturer’s explanation of what happens if the router or internet connection fails. Look specifically for whether recording continues, whether the camera can be viewed on the local network, whether alerts stop, and how you retrieve footage while away from home. A camera advertised as recording without Wi-Fi may still need connectivity for setup, app access, or other features.

Pick a recording mode that captures the footage you need
Event-only recording uses storage differently from continuous recording: it saves selected motion or other detected events rather than a nonstop timeline. Continuous recording can make it easier to review what happened between alerts, but it also affects storage needs. Confirm that the model supports your preferred mode without a paid plan, rather than relying on a general claim about local storage.
Wyze says compatible cameras with microSD cards can record continuously or only events without a subscription. It also notes that card footage may require manual review to find a particular event: Wyze’s explanation of 24/7 local recording. That is a useful reminder to check not only whether footage is saved, but how practical it is to search and play back.

Check storage capacity, retention, and included media
- Confirm the supported card or hard-drive type and the maximum capacity for the exact model.
- Check whether the storage medium is included or sold separately.
- Ask how recording quality and mode affect how long footage is retained; do not infer a retention period from capacity alone.
- Find out what happens when storage fills, including whether older recordings are overwritten and whether you can back up important clips.
- Check whether any optional cloud backup is enabled in addition to local recording.
Manufacturers set different capacity limits across products, so a card that works in one camera may not be supported by another. Tapo’s camera guide discusses storage and other model-dependent setup considerations; consult the current specifications for the product you are considering.
Match the system to installation and location
Think through wiring, power, camera count, and where the recorder will sit before choosing a system. A microSD camera can keep the recorder inside the camera, while a DVR or NVR entails a separate recorder and cabling. For a wired installation, match a DVR to compatible coaxial cameras or an NVR to compatible IP cameras and Ethernet connections.

For outdoor placement, verify the exact camera’s weather rating and power arrangement. For night coverage, compare infrared and color night vision, and consider whether any illumination is suitable for the location. These are placement- and model-specific questions, not guarantees that every camera in a product family performs alike.
Use this checklist before you buy
- Find the exact model’s official support page. Confirm local recording is explicitly supported; do not rely on a broad brand-level statement.
- Identify the storage location. Determine whether recordings go to the camera, a hub, or an in-home DVR/NVR, and check for optional cloud backup.
- Confirm the recording mode. Check support for event-only or continuous recording and whether the desired mode works without a subscription.
- Check outage behavior. Verify what continues to work without internet: recording, local playback, notifications, live view, and remote access.
- Verify storage details. Check card or drive compatibility, maximum capacity, what is included, retention behavior, and how recordings are reviewed or backed up.
- For a wired system, verify compatibility and cabling. Match coaxial cameras with a compatible DVR or Ethernet-connected IP cameras with a compatible NVR; check PoE and installation requirements where relevant.
- Assess the location. Confirm weather suitability, power access, and the type of night vision appropriate for the scene.
- Review privacy and maintenance. Check account requirements, privacy settings, and firmware support. Local storage is a storage choice, not proof that a camera is secure or free of cloud dependencies.
Local storage is not a complete privacy or security guarantee
Keeping video on a card or recorder can reduce reliance on cloud video storage, but it does not by itself establish how an app, account, network connection, or other smart features handle data. Review the model’s account requirements, privacy controls, and firmware support. Consumer Reports says its camera evaluations include examining interfaces and network traffic, but that information alone does not establish the security of any particular model: Consumer Reports’ home security camera buying guide.
