If an app’s volume keeps returning to 100% in Windows 11, first check its individual Volume Mixer slider and assigned output device. Microsoft documents these controls and general audio troubleshooting steps, but its guidance does not identify one universal cause or guarantee a fix for every per-app reset. Use the checks below to narrow down when the change happens and whether it is part of a wider audio problem.

Check the affected app’s volume and output device

Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer. Find the affected app, check its volume slider, and confirm that its output-device assignment is the one you intend. Adjust the slider or select the correct device if needed. Microsoft identifies the Volume Mixer and per-app output selection as relevant controls when troubleshooting Windows audio problems: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows and Fix app audio not working while system sounds work in Windows.

Check the app’s route as well as its level: a change in which device an app uses can make the audio seem different even if the slider itself has not reset.

Find out what action triggers the reset

Change the setting, then test one event at a time. A reset reported after restarting an app is a different observation from one noticed only after restarting Windows or reconnecting audio hardware. Comparing these cases helps narrow down the trigger, but does not by itself prove what caused the change.

Computer Speakers for Desktop PC Laptop Monitor, Upgraded Touch Controls
  • IMPORTANT UPDATE NOTICE: Based on extensive customer advises, we’ve rolled out two major upgrades to this desktop speaker. First, volume control buttons have been added. Second, we increased the product thickness for a larger sound cavity, bringing moderate improvements in sound quality and volume.
  • HIGH-QUALITY SOUND: This laptop speaker is equipped with Dual 3W High-Excursion Drivers & Passive Radiator, delivering louder sound, wider dynamic range, enhanced bass and reduced distortion.
  • ONE CABLE FOR BOTH AUDIO & POWER: No 3.5mm AUX jack needed. Just one USB cable delivers both audio signal and power for the computer speaker to cut down cable clutter.
  • WIDE SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY: This upgraded PC speaker works with Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS laptops & PCs, compatible with HP, Lenovo, ThinkPad, ASUS, Dell, Samsung, Acer, LG and more. Simply install the latest audio driver for smooth audio playback.
  • PLUG-N-PLAY FOR SIMPLE SETUP: For Windows PCs: Plug the speaker into your computer’s USB port, click the taskbar “Speaker” icon, then select “USB Speakers” as your playback device, and you’re ready.
  1. Note the app’s volume value and selected output device after adjusting them.
  2. Close and reopen only the affected app, then check the slider and device assignment again.
  3. If the setting remains, restart Windows and check the same controls once more.
  4. If the change appears after reconnecting a headset, monitor, dock, or other audio device, note that timing and verify the app’s assigned output.

Individual user posts describe per-app settings changing after a reboot, but they are reports of symptoms, not controlled tests or proof of a universal Windows cause: Windows11 Sound settings don’t remember per-app volume after reboot and Volume Mixer doesn’t save individual app settings after system power off in Windows 11.

Tell a single-app issue from a broader audio failure

  • One app is silent but system sounds work: Check that app’s mixer level and assigned output device first.
  • Several apps fail, or Windows shows no output device: Investigate the audio device, Windows audio services, and driver using Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance.
  • The slider returns to 100%: That behavior alone does not establish that the hardware has failed.

Try general Windows audio troubleshooting if sound is also malfunctioning

If the reset comes with other audio faults, Microsoft’s general guidance covers restarting the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services, running the audio troubleshooter, and checking the audio driver. Follow the current instructions on Microsoft’s support page. If a driver update is needed, use the instructions for your exact PC or audio-device model from its manufacturer. These are general checks for audio problems; they are not a guaranteed repair for saved per-app volume levels.

Prepare a useful support report if the reset continues

Record enough detail to make the behavior reproducible:

  • Windows edition, version, and build;
  • the affected app and its version;
  • the output device and the app’s selected route;
  • the volume value before the change; and
  • whether it changes after reopening the app, restarting Windows, reconnecting audio hardware, or installing an update.

This information helps distinguish a repeatable app-specific change from a wider device or audio-service issue. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a definitive registry edit or one-size-fits-all repair for per-app volume resets.
