For most people, a comfortably cool bedroom is a useful place to start: CDC/NIOSH suggests about 65–68°F (18.3–20°C). It is not a universal prescription—sleep organizations give different ranges, and comfort depends on the person, bedding and room. If you wake feeling too warm, reduce heat in the room where possible and adjust what is trapping heat in the bed.

What temperature should your bedroom be for sleep?

Try 65–68°F (18.3–20°C) as a starting range. CDC/NIOSH’s 2020 sleep guidance says to keep the room comfortably cool, at about 65–68°F for most people, and use covers: CDC/NIOSH sleep tips. This is practical general guidance, not a precise medical rule.

Other sleep organizations recommend different ranges. The National Sleep Foundation gives 60–67°F and advises experimenting with nighttime settings because the ideal varies by person; Sleep Foundation also describes 65–68°F as reasonable for most people in its hot-night guidance. Those differences are a reason to treat any number as a starting point, not a single agreed optimum.

A Sleep Foundation summary of a study involving 50 older adults reports that participants tended to sleep worse below 68°F or above 77°F. It also reports that participants whose bedrooms reached 86°F had 5% to 10% lower sleep efficiency. These are findings reported for that particular older-adult sample, not universal thresholds for all adults. The summary does not establish the original study’s publication year. Why a hot room can make sleep harder

As sleep approaches, the body’s core temperature naturally falls and continues to fall during the night. Heat moves from the core toward the extremities as part of this process. A room that feels excessively warm may make it harder to shed heat comfortably.

Sleep Foundation describes associations between higher core temperature and less restorative slow-wave sleep, and reports that excessive ambient heat appears to reduce REM sleep. These are source-reported associations, not guaranteed effects for every person. A warm room can also simply feel uncomfortable and interrupt rest. Sleep Foundation: the best temperature for sleep

How to keep your room cool overnight

  1. Block daytime sun. Close blinds or curtains during sunny periods to limit heat buildup. Sleep Foundation’s hot-night tips
  2. Set the thermostat for comfort. If you can control it, try the CDC/NIOSH starting range of 65–68°F at night, then adjust according to how you sleep. A lower setting is not automatically better if it leaves you cold or uncomfortable.
  3. Ventilate only when outside conditions help. Open a window when outdoor air is cooler and suitable. Keep it closed if outside air is hotter or otherwise unsuitable.
  4. Choose airflow or active cooling based on the problem. A bedside, box or window fan moves air, which can help you feel cooler, but it does not necessarily lower the room’s temperature. Air conditioning can cool a hot room. Noise, outdoor conditions and what equipment you already have may affect which option is practical.
  5. Adjust the bed if it feels hotter than the room. Try lighter covers and breathable sheets or sleepwear. Cotton and linen are examples mentioned by Sleep Foundation, not proven best choices for every sleeper; comfort is personal. Sleep Foundation on temperatures and bedding

Can a warm bath help you sleep?

A warm bath is a routine option, not a way to cool the room. CDC/NIOSH says a warm bath 30 minutes to two hours before bed may help promote relaxation and optimize body-temperature changes that aid sleep. Try it if it suits you; it is separate from the room-cooling steps above. CDC/NIOSH sleep tips

When temperature may not be the whole problem

If sleep remains difficult despite a comfortable room and enough time in bed, temperature may not be the only factor. CDC/NIOSH advises contacting a doctor for persistent sleep difficulties—for example, regularly taking 30 minutes or more to fall asleep, or having repeated long awakenings despite spending 7–9 hours in bed.
