If you want a safe alternative to water marketed as “radiant” or associated with radioactivity, choose ordinary drinking water from a regulated U.S. public water system that meets applicable standards. If you rely on a private well, arrange source-specific testing when you have a concern; do not assume a generic pitcher or carbon filter removes radium.
Is radioactive water safe to drink?
“Radioactive” does not by itself mean water is either beneficial or harmful at every concentration. Radium is naturally occurring and can enter groundwater from local soil and rock. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “The concentration of radium in drinking water is generally low, but some regions have higher concentrations due to local geology.” Chronic exposure to high levels can increase the incidence of bone, liver, or breast cancer. EPA: Radionuclide Basics—Radium
For covered community water systems, the U.S. standard is a maximum contaminant level of 5 pCi/L for combined radium-226 and radium-228. It applies to the two isotopes together, not as a separate 5 pCi/L allowance for each. This enforceable standard is not a claim that water contains no radioactivity or a product certification. EPA reports that natural radium-226 in surface water generally ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 pCi/L. EPA: Radiation Terms and Units EPA: Radionuclides Rule
What is “radiant water”?
The term “radiant” does not identify a reliably established current water product or a recognized safety category. It should not be treated as evidence that a water is safe, beneficial, or tested for radionuclides. If you mean a particular bottled water or wellness product, check its exact name, label, and disclosures; do not assume that bottled, mineral, or wellness water has been tested for radium.

What water should you use instead?
If your home uses public water
Use water from the regulated community system as the practical default, and consult your supplier’s current water-quality report or local drinking-water authority for information specific to your supply. Public systems test and treat contaminants, including radionuclides, and must meet applicable drinking-water standards. EPA: Basic Information About Your Drinking Water
If your home uses a private well
Private wells are not regulated by EPA in the same way as community water systems, so municipal monitoring does not cover them. Because radium occurrence depends on local geology, ask your local or state drinking-water authority how to arrange radionuclide testing through an appropriately qualified laboratory. How do you test well water for radium?
- Contact your local or state drinking-water authority. Ask how to arrange radionuclide testing and which laboratories are appropriately qualified for the measurement.
- Confirm the test scope before sampling. Ask whether it covers radium-226 and radium-228, and how results will be reported, including activity units. Follow the laboratory’s collection and handling instructions.
- Use the result to decide next steps. If radium is elevated, consult the relevant authority and a qualified water-treatment professional about options suited to your actual water chemistry.
Will a household filter remove radium?
Do not infer radium removal from labels such as “purifying,” “radiant,” or “water filter.” The available evidence does not establish that a generic pitcher or carbon filter is adequate. Before selecting a system, ask for independent certification or test data relevant to radium and to the exact water conditions in your home.
GreensandPlus, a treatment media described by its vendor, is presented as usable for radium removal from groundwater only when manganese is present in the raw water. That conditional claim is not a universal household recommendation. If a test identifies elevated radium, have a qualified professional and the local drinking-water authority help assess treatment against the measured result and source-water chemistry.
