On current Samsung Galaxy phones, set up a focus session through Settings > Modes and Routines > Modes. Choose a study or work mode if one is available, or create a custom mode, then configure Do not disturb and app-use restrictions as your phone allows. You can turn the mode on yourself or set an available condition to start it automatically.
What Focus Mode does on a Galaxy
Samsung describes Focus Mode as a way to temporarily pause or silence notifications from selected apps, for situations such as reading or studying. Samsung’s current setup guidance places customizable activity modes under Modes and Routines; the exact controls and labels can differ between phones.
A focus setup can combine notification control with restrictions on app use. Do not disturb helps quiet interruptions, while Restrict app usage can limit access to apps during a mode when that control is available. These are related tools, not a guarantee that every Galaxy has an identically named standalone Focus Mode screen.
Set up a study, work, or custom mode
- Open Settings. Tap Modes and Routines, then tap Modes.
- Choose an existing mode or make one. Select a study or work mode if your phone offers one. To create your own, tap Add mode > Custom, choose a name, color, and icon, then tap Done.
- Choose what the mode changes. Configure Do not disturb and, if available, Restrict app usage. Review the options shown on your own device; controls vary by model and software.
- Set how it starts. For a session you start yourself, select the mode and tap Turn on. To have it start automatically, tap Turn on automatically and choose a condition offered on your phone.
- End the session when you are done. Turn the mode off from its controls. An automatically triggered mode can also follow its configured condition.
Choose an existing mode or create a custom one

Choose a preset when its purpose and available settings fit your session. Make a custom mode when you want a distinct setup or name. Either approach can support manual use or an automatic trigger if that option appears on your phone.

If you cannot find Modes and Routines
Menu names and locations are not identical on every Galaxy. Samsung’s Digital Wellbeing guide says the features it covers require Android 10 or later, notes that screens and settings vary by carrier, software version, and model, and explains that some options have moved to Modes and Routines.

- Search Settings for Modes and Routines or Digital Wellbeing.
- Check your phone’s software version if neither search finds the relevant controls.
- Use the options actually shown on your device rather than assuming a particular Galaxy model has a separate Focus Mode menu.
