Choose by operation first: use a sander to prepare or finish a surface, and a grinder for a genuine grinding or cutting task. For sanding, a random-orbit model is a practical fit for broad areas, a triangular Corner Cat-style sander reaches corners and tight spaces, and a belt sander is positioned for more aggressive removal over larger areas. Ryobi model availability and specifications vary by region, so confirm the exact local tool and its manual before buying.

Start with the job: sanding or grinding?

A shared Ryobi brand or battery platform does not make a grinder and a sander interchangeable. Sanders use an abrasive to prepare or finish a surface; grinders are intended for grinding or cutting operations. Pick the operation your project requires, then compare tools within that category.

For a grinder, check the current local model’s manual for its rated wheel or disc size and type, required guard, and workpiece suitability. The available grinder evidence is historical and regional, not a current U.S. model comparison: RYOBI Europe’s 2019 EMEA power tools catalogue lists the R18AG7 and R18AG and battery-specific cut figures for 13 mm threaded bar. Those figures apply to that catalogue’s stated task and batteries; they do not establish current U.S. grinder capacity or performance on other materials.

Choose a sander by surface size, access, and finish

Format Best fit What the cited Ryobi listing says Check before buying
Random-orbit Broad, relatively open surfaces where a general finishing format is useful. Ryobi U.S. model PCL406B is a 5-inch 18V ONE+ sander listed at 10,000 orbits per minute, with hook-and-loop paper attachment and a manufacturer claim of 40% reduced vibration. Use 5-inch-compatible abrasive with the correct attachment. Confirm whether the listing is tool-only or a kit.
Triangular detail / Corner Cat Corners, edges, and tighter spaces where a compact pointed pad can reach. Ryobi U.S. model PCL416B has a compact triangular base, hook-and-loop attachment, and a manufacturer claim of 50% reduced vibration. Match abrasive to the triangular pad; round discs are not interchangeable by assumption. Check dust collection details for the exact listing.
Belt More aggressive removal over larger areas. Ryobi Europe describes model R18BS-0 as intended for heavy-duty applications over large areas; its page lists tool-free belt tracking and fitting, a dust bag, and up to 700 g of material removed per hour. That removal figure is a manufacturer claim, not a universal rate; results depend on material and conditions. Verify regional availability and belt specification.

The PCL406B and PCL416B features and figures are from their respective Ryobi U.S. product pages and Ryobi U.S. Corner Cat page. The R18BS-0 details are from the Ryobi Europe product page. These are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not independent comparative test results.

Check abrasive fit, dust control, and kit contents

Match the consumable to the pad or belt

Confirm abrasive shape, dimensions, and attachment before purchasing replacement supplies. The PCL406B listing specifies a 5-inch hook-and-loop pad, while the PCL416B has a triangular hook-and-loop pad; a round disc should not be assumed to fit the Corner Cat. Belt sanders require the specified belt size and fitting method for the particular model.

Look at dust collection on the exact tool

Dust-control details differ by model and listing. Ryobi Europe’s R18BS-0 page specifies a dust bag. The PCL416B page describes a dust port and includes dust collection information; confirm whether a bag, adapter, or other accessory is included in the configuration you are considering. Do not infer hose compatibility from a product category alone.

Distinguish tool-only listings from kits

Check the box contents before comparing listings: battery and charger inclusion can change the total setup you need. Product configurations and availability can change. Ryobi’s CFS1503K Corner Cat support page lists a legacy kit with a sander, dust bag, assorted sanding, scrubbing, and polishing pads, sandpaper, a punch, storage bag, and manual. It is historical kit information, not evidence of current stock or a current-model recommendation.

Verify the model in your region

Do not transfer a model number or specification from one market to another. The PCL406B and PCL416B cited here are on Ryobi U.S. pages; the R18BS-0 information is from Ryobi Europe. Ryobi Australia’s sanders category page is a separate regional listing. Check the manufacturer’s site for your country and confirm the model number, kit contents, consumable fit, and current availability before purchasing.

A quick selection checklist

  • Operation: Is the job surface sanding, or does it genuinely require grinding or cutting?
  • Work area and access: Is the surface broad and open, or do corners and tight spaces dominate?
  • Removal versus finish: Do you need more aggressive removal, or controlled surface finishing?
  • Consumables: Does the abrasive shape, attachment, or belt size match the tool?
  • Dust and power: What collection accessories, battery, and charger are included in this exact listing?
  • Region and safety: Is the model sold in your market, and have you checked its manual and required accessories?
