A classic cascade instead stacks windows with their title bars visible. A Microsoft Q&A community answer dated August 7, 2025, reports that Windows 11 does not include the classic built-in Cascade Windows command; Snap is a different arrangement, not a one-for-one replacement.
How Cascade Windows and Snap Layouts differ
A cascade is an overlapping stack: you can see parts of several windows, especially their title bars, and bring one to the front. Snap Layouts place windows into predetermined regions so that several apps remain visible without being stacked on top of one another.
Microsoft describes Snap as offering “predetermined layouts that you can choose from to organize all your open windows” in its Snap Your Windows guidance. That documentation explains Snap, not a classic cascading arrangement. The report that Windows 11 lacks the built-in Cascade Windows taskbar command comes from a Microsoft Q&A community answer, rather than a formal Microsoft feature-removal announcement.
Which should you use?
| Your goal | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keep apps in clearly divided regions | Snap Layouts | Choose a predefined layout and fill its open positions with other windows. The available layouts can vary with display size. |
| See several overlapping windows as a stack | Classic Cascade, if available in your environment | The cited community answer reports that Windows 11 has no built-in classic Cascade Windows command. Snap creates regions rather than an overlapping stack. |
| Arrange a window with the keyboard | Snap keyboard controls | Windows key + an arrow key positions the active window; further arrow presses can change its position before you release the Windows key. |
| Return to a group of snapped windows | Snap Groups | Windows can offer a snapped group again through taskbar app hover, Task View, or Alt + Tab. |
How to arrange windows with Snap in Windows 11
Choose a layout from the Snap flyout
- Hover over a window’s maximize or restore button, or press Windows key + Z, to open the Snap flyout.
- Select the layout region you want the window to occupy.
- When Snap Assist presents the remaining positions, select other open windows to fill them.
Use the Snap bar
- Drag a window toward the top edge of the screen.
- When the Snap bar appears, select a layout and place the window in one of its regions.
- Choose other open windows to fill available positions if prompted.
Snap with the keyboard
Press Windows key + an arrow key to move the active window into a snapped position. While holding the Windows key, use additional arrow presses to move it between available positions; release the key when it is where you want it.

Resize a snapped arrangement
Drag the divider between adjacent snapped windows to change their relative sizes. Microsoft says adjacent snapped windows can resize together as you move the divider.
Adjust Snap behavior
Open Settings > System > Multitasking and expand or use the Snap windows controls. You can turn Snap on or off and customize related options, including suggestions for other windows, the Snap flyout on maximize-button hover or top-edge drag, snapped-group visibility, and snapping without dragging a window all the way to the screen edge.

The Windows 11 help guidance describes Snap features; it does not promise that every PC will show the same set of layouts. The options presented can depend on display size.

Microsoft’s Win32 taskbar documentation describes taskbar shortcut-menu commands to cascade, stack, and show windows side by side. That technical background establishes that these commands existed in Windows taskbar behavior; it does not establish that classic Cascade is available in current Windows 11.
