Then run the documented command against the domain you want to check. Configure IPv6 deliberately, and verify the CLI’s exit behavior before using DNS findings to fail a build.
Choose Docker or a runner installation
Zonemaster-CLI is the command-line interface to Zonemaster-Engine. The official documentation supports both local installation and Docker invocation. The practical choice depends on what your runner permits and how you want to manage dependencies and versions.
| Approach | When it fits | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Docker image | The runner has a usable Docker installation and container networking. | Avoids installing Zonemaster’s Perl dependency stack directly on the runner. Select and manage the image tag deliberately. |
| Install the CLI | Docker is unavailable or your runner is already configured for the CLI’s dependencies. | Use the official instructions for the runner’s operating system; installation steps differ by platform. |
The official Zonemaster-CLI installation guide prefers the project package repository and apt install zonemaster-cli for Debian and Ubuntu, and also documents a CPAN route. Rocky Linux and FreeBSD have separate dependency and CPAN instructions; do not assume the Debian procedure applies to them.
Run Zonemaster from a CI job

Ensure Docker is installed and usable on the runner, then invoke the image with the domain under test:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
docker run -t --rm zonemaster/cli example.com --no-ipv6
Replace example.com with your zone. The official guide also shows --pull always to fetch the current image. That is convenient when you want to track updates, but it makes the image version change without a corresponding workflow edit. For repeatable builds, choose a version tag and update it intentionally. Docker Hub’s zonemaster/cli image page is the place to check available tags; its tag list changes over time.
Illustrative GitHub Actions wrapper
The following is an example of placing the documented Docker command in a job, not an official Zonemaster workflow. Check your provider’s current Docker and networking requirements before using it. This example assumes the runner has a usable Docker CLI:

zonemaster-cli --test basic zonemaster.net
man zonemaster-cli
The first command should print delegation test results. In the pipeline, substitute the domain you intend to validate. The --test basic option runs a named test case rather than the default full test, so use it as a smoke check, not as equivalent coverage.
Configure IPv6 and test scope
Decide whether to use --no-ipv6
The CLI guide advises using --no-ipv6 when the host or network has no IPv6 connectivity. Docker does not support IPv6 unless it is enabled in the Docker daemon. Hosted runner capabilities vary, so decide whether the job is meant to test IPv6 reachability before disabling it. If IPv6 is in scope, make sure the runner and container network can reach it rather than silently skipping those checks.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Choose the amount of testing
The --test option selects a named test case, and --list_tests lists available tests. Targeting a case may shorten a job, but narrows coverage compared with the default full test. Keep that distinction explicit in the workflow and its documentation.
Read and preserve the output
Results stream as test cases run. By default, the CLI prints plain text at NOTICE severity and higher. Use --level=INFO to include INFO-level messages, --raw for raw output, or the documented JSON output when a downstream process needs structured data. Keep the output in the CI log or save it using the provider’s normal artifact mechanism.

Do not assume a particular warning or error automatically maps to a failed job. The installation and quick-start documentation does not establish a universal CI pass/fail contract for DNS findings. Before making results a release gate, check the help or manual for the CLI version you selected and define the exact status or output conditions your pipeline should enforce.
Use proposed DNS records for pre-deployment checks
If parent nameserver, glue, or DS records are planned but not yet published, the CLI supports supplying proposed values with repeated --ns and --ds options. Use these only when the intended records are known, and follow the current CLI documentation for the exact argument syntax. This can help check a planned change before deployment; it does not replace checking the published delegation after the change.
Manage image versions and runner differences
Version tags are time-sensitive. At the time reflected by the available release information, Docker Hub listed v8.0.2 as a recent tag, and the official Zonemaster-CLI release page associated v8.0.2 with Zonemaster v2026.1 and v2026.1.1. Confirm current tags and release notes when setting up or updating a pipeline. Docker Hub says the official image is updated at least twice a year, so a floating current tag should not be treated as a fixed version.
The official Zonemaster Docker documentation says its components can be used on Linux, macOS, and Windows, but that does not guarantee every CI provider permits the same Docker setup. The CLI guide also notes that its example image may produce an architecture warning on Apple M1 and shows --platform linux/amd64 as a workaround; that platform-specific note is not a general CI requirement.

Quick Recap
Before making the job a release gate
- Confirm the selected runner can use Docker, if the job uses the image.
- Decide whether IPv6 is part of the check; enable working connectivity or explicitly use
--no-ipv6. - Choose full or targeted test coverage and document any reduction.
- Select a deliberate image version if repeatability matters.
- Choose a readable or machine-readable output format that your team can inspect.
- Verify the selected CLI version’s exit and status behavior before mapping findings to CI success or failure.
