Sometimes—but the red sticker alone does not tell you whether the item is recyclable. Councils and waste services use red stickers in different ways: they may mark a rejected bin, identify contamination or sorting problems, or label a particular recycling stream. Read the notice and check the instructions for the service that collects your bin.
First, work out what the sticker refers to
Read the entire sticker, including any item it names and any instructions. Check which bin or collection service it is about. A red sticker on an unemptied household bin often means the crew could not collect it as presented; a red sticker on a communal bin may simply identify what belongs in that container.
There is no universal red-sticker standard established by the local authorities cited here. The sticker’s wording, the bin type and the local collection rules matter more than its colour.
What to do if your bin was rejected
- Check the local accepted-materials list. Use the current guidance from the council or waste provider responsible for your address. A recycling symbol on packaging does not guarantee that your curbside service accepts it; materials also need to be sortable through that service’s facility.
- Remove the item or contamination named on the sticker. If the sticker says the contents need sorting, separate them into the correct containers as directed.
- Follow the collection instruction on the notice or council page. Depending on the service, the bin may be collected on the next scheduled day, or you may need to contact the council to arrange a return collection.
- Ask the named service if the notice is unclear. Give them the bin type and the sticker’s wording rather than relying on colour alone.
How local red-sticker rules differ

What may count as contamination?
Rules vary by collection service, so use the list for your address. Lower Hutt’s examples of contamination include soft plastics, bags, food scraps or liquids, nappies, textiles, garden waste, polystyrene, and dirty or greasy items. Warrington likewise explains that its blue-bin service accepts a limited set of materials because the items must be accepted and sortable at its facility; some other materials need to go to community recycling centres.

Why following the notice matters
Contamination can affect more than one household’s collection. In a 7 September 2023 bulletin, Maidstone Borough Council reported that rejected recycling loads had cost taxpayers across Kent £25,000 over the previous two months. That is a local historical figure, not a current cost estimate or a national statistic.
