Choose foobar2000 for playback options and extensibility
foobar2000 is a stronger match if you want to configure how your music is played or processed. Its official overview lists a customizable interface, tagging, ReplayGain, DSP, transcoding, and a component system for third-party extensions, alongside mainstream format and gapless playback.
That feature set may suit listeners who want to tune the app, but the cited product information does not establish that it is easier or harder to set up than MediaMonkey. Compare their interfaces and settings with your own files rather than assuming one workflow will feel simpler.

Check operating-system support before importing your library

These are page-listed details that can change; check the relevant publisher download page before installation. The foobar2000 overview also lists macOS, Android, and iOS, and says its Windows version works on Linux via Wine. MediaMonkey lists an Android app.
If you use another operating system or want to sync with a phone, verify that the specific app and features you need are available for your device. A platform listing alone does not establish that every library-management or sharing feature works identically across devices.

Do you need a paid edition or a CD drive?
MediaMonkey’s download page lists Standard as free, alongside 2024 Gold at $39.95 USD and Lifetime Gold at $99.95 USD. Check the current edition details and cost there before paying; the documented cleanup features make Standard a sensible starting point.
A CD drive is only relevant if you own audio CDs you want to rip and lack an internal optical drive. Both products document CD-related capabilities—foobar2000 lists CD ripping, while MediaMonkey lists CD ripping and recording. An external USB CD/DVD drive is an optional way to read discs, not a requirement for managing music files already on your computer; neither product page recommends a particular model.

- For a large or shared library: compare the cataloging and device-sharing features you actually need. Treat MediaMonkey’s 100,000+ figure as its publisher’s claim, not an independently verified capacity benchmark.
- Before migrating: keep a backup of your music files and tags, confirm the app supports your Windows version, and check that any desired phone or device workflow is available.
