If playlists or songs are missing, first check which app you opened: Windows Media Player Legacy and the newer Media Player are separate apps, and Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that they automatically share libraries or playlists. Then check whether Legacy is installed, whether Windows is an N edition that needs the Media Feature Pack, and whether the problem is a missing file, an unresolved playlist entry, or a damaged Legacy library database.

First, identify which Media Player is open

Windows Media Player Legacy is the older app with a Player Library. The newer Media Player is a separate Windows app. Microsoft describes Legacy as an optional feature on Windows 10 and 11, and recommends the newer app for modern video features such as 4K. The available Microsoft documentation does not confirm automatic library or playlist migration between them, so instructions for Legacy may not fix a problem in the newer app.

Check the app name in Start or in its window title before changing settings. If the missing items are expected in Legacy’s Player Library but you have opened the newer Media Player, treat that as an app mismatch rather than evidence that your files have disappeared.

Check whether Windows Media Player Legacy is installed

If Legacy is not available in Start, it may not be installed. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page gives these optional-feature paths; labels can vary with Windows version and build:

Check for Windows 10 or 11 N

Windows N editions omit Windows Media Player and related media technologies until the Media Feature Pack is installed. If your Windows edition name includes “N,” open Optional Features in Settings and install the Media Feature Pack. Restart the PC to complete installation, as Microsoft requires. This may restore missing media components; it does not by itself explain every missing playlist or library entry.

Work out whether the playlist, its media files, or the library is missing

Use File Explorer to check whether the media files and playlist file still exist. Then distinguish among three symptoms: the playlist file is absent, the playlist appears but its tracks cannot be found, or the whole Player Library is empty. A playlist can be present while its entries point to files the player cannot locate; that differs from a missing library index.

That confirms recognition of those file extensions by that player version, not that every playlist path or encoding will work, or that the newer Media Player imports Legacy playlists. Restore the Legacy library before resetting its database

If Windows Media Player Legacy is installed and its library is empty, fails to retain folders, or otherwise behaves as though its index is damaged, try Microsoft’s in-player restore command first:

  1. Open Windows Media Player Legacy.
  2. Press Ctrl+M to show the menu bar if it is hidden.
  3. Select Tools > Advanced > Restore Media Library.

This is a library-repair step, not a request to delete your music or video files. If the issue remains, Microsoft documents a more disruptive database reset: close the player, open %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftMedia Player, delete the files inside that folder while leaving the folder itself in place, and reopen the player. The player rebuilds its local database. Do not delete your Music, Videos, or other media folders.

Database corruption is a documented failure mode, not proof of the cause on every PC. Microsoft’s specific symptom list is for Windows Media Player 11: users could be unable to view, add, or delete library items; media-information changes might not apply; a database-corruption error could appear; or the Monitored Folders list could be empty or fail to save. See the Windows Media Player 11 library troubleshooting article for that version-specific documentation.

Use Repair, Reset, or reinstall only if needed

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide also describes Repair/Reset through the app’s Advanced options and removing and reinstalling Windows Media Player through Windows features. These are separate options from deleting the database files. In particular, Microsoft says Reset removes custom settings and preferences but not media files or the library. Follow the current instructions for your Windows version in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide, and use these broader app-maintenance steps only after checking the app, edition, file paths, and library restore option.
