If your Windows 11 PC still starts and you want to repair Windows without losing your apps, files, or settings, start with Fix problems using Windows Update if the option is available. Choose a clean installation from installation media when Windows will not start, less disruptive recovery options have failed, or you need to remove the existing Windows installation. A clean install deletes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings, so back up first.
What “Windows Update” means in this comparison
This is not an ordinary Windows Update that installs a cumulative patch. Fix problems using Windows Update is a Windows 11 recovery feature that reinstalls the same Windows version already on the PC to repair system files and components. It keeps apps, personal files, and settings.

A clean installation is different: it installs Windows from installation media and removes the existing Windows installation’s files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Using installation media does not automatically mean wiping the PC; running setup from within Windows can instead offer choices about what to keep.

Microsoft’s Windows recovery options overview distinguishes Reset this PC, the Windows Update reinstall, and installation-media reinstall. These names describe different routes and outcomes, not interchangeable versions of the same procedure.

What does each option keep or remove?
Fix problems using Windows Update
This Windows 11 feature reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, personal files, and settings. It requires an internet connection and power for the full process. The option may not appear on work- or school-managed devices, or on Windows installations that do not meet its version and update prerequisites. Check Microsoft’s feature guidance if it is missing.
In-place reinstall from installation media
When Windows is running, open the installation media and run setup.exe. Setup lets you choose whether to keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or keep nothing. Match the Windows edition you install to your license. This is not the same as booting from the media to perform a clean installation.

Clean installation from installation media
A clean install removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings from the selected drive. Microsoft describes it as an advanced option and advises proceeding only if you are confident. Because it erases data, make a backup before starting if you can.
Reset this PC
Reset is a separate reinstall route. Keep my files retains personal files but removes apps and settings; Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings. Cloud download gets a fresh copy of Windows, while local reinstall uses files already on the PC. If the device is encrypted, Windows Recovery Environment may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. How to prepare before reinstalling
- Back up important data. A clean install removes personal files, and Reset this PC’s outcome depends on the option you select.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if the PC is encrypted. You may need it to reset the PC from Windows Recovery Environment.
- For the Windows Update repair feature, keep power and internet connected throughout. Microsoft’s instruction is explicit: “Keep your PC connected to a power source and the internet during the entire reinstallation process.”
- If you need installation media, create it on a working PC. Microsoft supports creating media on a USB flash drive or using an ISO/DVD route. A USB drive is not needed for the built-in Windows Update repair feature. See Create installation media for Windows.
- Confirm your Windows edition. The edition you install should match your license.
What if your PC runs Windows 10?
The Fix problems using Windows Update recovery feature discussed here is for Windows 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Repairing a Windows 10 installation does not restore standard support; check Microsoft’s recovery guidance and installation-media guidance for the available routes.
