If Windows Media Player disappeared, you can usually add Windows Media Player Legacy again through Windows Settings. The steps differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11, and Windows N editions need the Media Feature Pack first. Legacy is the classic player; it is not the newer Media Player app.
Restore Windows Media Player Legacy in Windows 11
- Open Settings and go to System > Optional features.
- Select View features beside the option to add an optional feature.
- Search for Windows Media Player Legacy, select it, then choose Next and Add.
- When installation finishes, search for Windows Media Player from Start.
Microsoft describes Windows Media Player Legacy as an optional feature in Windows 10 and 11, with availability dependent on edition. If it does not appear in the feature list, check which Windows edition is installed and whether it is an N edition. Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting instructions cover the feature’s availability.
Restore Windows Media Player in Windows 10
- Open Settings and go to Apps > Apps & features.
- Open Manage optional features, then choose Add a feature.
- Select Windows Media Player and choose Install.
- After installation, search for Windows Media Player from Start.
Microsoft says Windows Media Player Legacy is included with clean Windows 10 installations and may be offered as an optional feature in some editions. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; enabling the player does not restore Windows support or security updates.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit Windows Media Player and related media technologies. Add the Media Feature Pack first, then restart the PC. Microsoft notes that some media functions may also require additional Store apps or codecs.

- On Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Optional features > View features.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Optional features > Add a feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack and add it.
- Restart the computer after installation.
Then follow the Windows-version steps above to add Windows Media Player Legacy if it is not already available. See Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions for Windows 10 and 11 N.
What Windows Media Player Legacy can do
The classic player supports media-file and audio-CD playback, library and playlist management, metadata and album art, audio-CD creation, transfers to portable music players, and streaming content from websites. Its audio-CD burning feature is useful if the PC has compatible burner hardware and you have blank CD-R discs.

DVD playback is not included. Installing Legacy alone does not add DVD playback. Microsoft’s Legacy feature and troubleshooting guidance identifies DVD playback as outside the app’s included functionality.

Use Legacy when you want its classic library or audio-CD workflows. For modern video features such as 4K, Microsoft recommends the newer Media Player app. They are separate applications, and Microsoft’s cited support information does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison; do not assume the newer app includes every Legacy function.

If a file still will not play
A missing or unsupported codec can prevent Windows Media Player from opening a file. Check whether the format requires a codec that is installed and supported. Adding Legacy restores the application, but it does not guarantee playback of every file format.
