Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends trying the automated troubleshooter before manually resetting update components. In Windows 11, you can launch it through Get Help, or use the Settings route below. When it finishes, restart your PC and check for updates again.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Select Run next to Windows Update.
- Follow the prompts, then restart the device.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Clear the Windows Update download cache
If the troubleshooter does not resolve the problem, Microsoft documents a narrower reset: stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start the service again. This clears the working cache without renaming the additional catroot2 folder or restarting BITS.

- Open the Services app.
- Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand delete the folder’s contents. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm the service is stopped before proceeding. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the PC and check for updates.

Reset the update components with Command Prompt
Use this more extensive procedure only if the simpler steps have not worked and you are comfortable using the command line. Microsoft explicitly cautions that it recommends these procedures only for people comfortable working in Command Prompt. Back up personal files first, and run the commands from an administrator Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter each command below separately. Wait for it to finish before entering the next one:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv- After all six commands complete, close Command Prompt and restart the PC.
The commands stop Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Windows Update, rename the two update working folders, then start both services again. If any command returns an error, do not assume the reset succeeded: note the exact message and consult Microsoft’s issue-specific update guidance or run the troubleshooter again. Repair Windows system files
From an administrator Command Prompt, run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repair first, wait for it to finish, then run System File Checker (SFC). Allow SFC to complete its verification to 100%.

Reinstall the current Windows version to repair it
If Windows 11 offers the option, go to Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while keeping apps, files, and settings. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet during the process. This repair reinstall is distinct from Reset this PC. See Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

Consider uninstalling a recent update only if the problem began afterward
If the update failures began immediately after installing a particular update, review Microsoft’s recovery options for removing a recent update. Uninstalling an update is a separate recovery action, not part of the component-reset commands. See Recovery options in Windows.
