First identify which keyboard you have: the Mac Magic Keyboard connects over Bluetooth, while Magic Keyboard for iPad attaches through the iPad’s Smart Connector. For a Mac keyboard, check its power switch and your Mac’s Bluetooth, then try a wired pairing and charge. The iPad model follows a separate troubleshooting path below.
Fix a Mac Magic Keyboard that will not connect or type
These steps apply to Apple’s Bluetooth keyboards for Mac, including rechargeable models and Touch ID variants. If your keyboard attaches magnetically to an iPad, skip to the iPad troubleshooting section.
1. Check the keyboard’s power switch
- Slide the keyboard’s power switch off. The green area beneath the switch should no longer be visible.
- Slide it back on. A visible green area means the keyboard is powered on.
Apple says a Mac Magic Keyboard connects wirelessly over Bluetooth when it is turned on and paired. If it still does not type, check Bluetooth on the Mac next.
2. Confirm Bluetooth is on
Use the MacBook’s built-in trackpad or connect a USB mouse, then open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. On older macOS versions, open Apple menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on. If you cannot turn it on, restart the Mac and check again, as Apple recommends.

#1 Best Overall
- Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that’ll power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
If the keyboard is connected but you have no USB mouse, Apple also documents a keyboard-driven route: press Command–Space, search for Bluetooth File Exchange, open it, and use Return as directed in Apple’s connection troubleshooting instructions. Labels and navigation may vary by macOS version.
3. Pair and charge a rechargeable keyboard over a cable
Check the charging port on the keyboard and the available ports on your Mac before choosing a cable. Apple lists USB-C, USB-C to Lightning, and Lightning to USB among the cables used to connect supported keyboards to a Mac.

- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
- Turn on the keyboard.
- Connect it to the Mac using a compatible cable.
- Leave it connected for one minute. Apple says the cable connection pairs the accessory and charges its built-in battery.
- Disconnect the cable to use the keyboard wirelessly.
While connected, the keyboard can be used for typing. See Apple’s setup instructions for the cable pairing steps.
4. Check the battery charge
For a rechargeable keyboard, check the charge level in Control Centre > Bluetooth or in the Bluetooth menu, depending on your macOS interface. Apple’s keyboard does not show a charge percentage on the device itself. The battery status and charging steps are covered in Apple’s rechargeable accessory guidance and Mac charging instructions.

5. Consider wireless interference
If the keyboard connects but will not stay connected, Apple identifies wireless interference as one possible cause. Its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth interference guidance can help you investigate. Interference is only one possibility; the connection problem alone does not identify a particular device or source as the cause.
Troubleshoot an older battery-powered Apple Wireless Keyboard
Some older Apple Wireless Keyboard models have removable batteries and no Lightning port. They use a different setup than rechargeable Magic Keyboards, so do not try the cable-pairing steps above.

- Use a working mouse or trackpad, or a MacBook’s built-in trackpad, to open the Mac’s Bluetooth settings.
- Turn on the keyboard and look for a blinking LED, which indicates that it is discoverable. If the LED does not light, Apple says the batteries may need replacing.
- If the LED lights briefly but does not blink, the keyboard may already be connected to another nearby Mac. Remove it from that Mac’s Bluetooth list, then turn the keyboard off and on.
- When the keyboard appears in Bluetooth settings on the Mac you want to use, select Connect.
- If asked for a passcode, type it on the keyboard being set up and press Return on that keyboard.

If it does not respond, follow this order based on Apple’s iPad keyboard troubleshooting guidance:
- Confirm that your iPad model is compatible with the keyboard.
- Update iPadOS.
- Disconnect the keyboard and clean the Smart Connector on both surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Remove any other case or cover, where applicable, and reconnect the keyboard.
- Restart the iPad if the keyboard still does not respond.
When to contact Apple or consider replacement
If the keyboard still fails after the steps for its product family, contact Apple Support or arrange a qualified assessment if you suspect a hardware fault. A connection failure by itself does not establish that the keyboard needs replacement.
If you do replace it, match the keyboard to the intended host device: a Mac Bluetooth model and an iPad Smart Connector model are not interchangeable setup paths. Also check compatibility, keyboard layout and language, charging connector generation, and whether you want features such as Touch ID. Apple’s support material establishes connector variations and connection types, but does not establish current prices or retailer stock.
