You can switch between Opera Developer and stable while preserving your bookmarks by exporting them from the source browser to an HTML file, then importing that file into the destination. Passwords require a separate CSV export and import. Opera Sync may carry selected settings and other data, but Opera’s documentation does not explicitly guarantee syncing between Developer and stable. Keep the source profile until you have checked the destination.

For most people, use the bookmark HTML route, then handle passwords and settings separately. Sync can be convenient if you already use it, but it should not be your only backup when switching channels.
Before you switch: check your channel and version
In Opera, open opera:about/ or go to the menu’s Update & Recovery page to identify the installed version. The page may also show the profile location. Treat that local location as specific to your computer and installation; fixed paths found online are not universal.
Export and import bookmarks
Export from the source browser
- Open the Bookmarks manager in Opera Developer or stable—the browser that currently has the bookmarks you want to keep.
- Use the import/export control at the bottom of the left panel and choose the export option.
- Save the resulting bookmarks HTML file somewhere easy to identify. If the bookmarks are important, keep an additional offline copy.
Import into the destination browser
- Install or open the Opera channel you are switching to.
- In Settings under Synchronization, choose Import bookmarks and settings, or open the Bookmarks manager and use its import/export control.
- Select the saved HTML file, then inspect bookmark folders and Speed Dial entries in the destination.
Opera documents bookmark export as an HTML text file and provides an import flow. The HTML file is a bookmark transfer, not a complete browser backup: it does not include passwords or all settings. See Opera’s Features help and Customization help.

Use Opera Sync for selected data, with a backup
Opera says desktop Sync can include bookmarks, tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history, and passwords. Sign in to the same Opera account in both installations, then inspect Advanced sync settings and select the categories you want. Opera describes data as merging to the account across signed-in browsers; its documentation does not expressly confirm that Developer and stable will sync with each other in every configuration. Transfer passwords separately if needed
Opera’s FAQ documents exporting passwords to a CSV file through Password Manager settings, then importing that file in the receiving browser. This is separate from bookmark HTML export. A CSV contains credentials, so keep it in a secure location during transfer, avoid leaving it in a shared folder, and remove the transfer copy after you have confirmed the import. Check settings and verify the destination before removing anything
Sync can include settings, but there is no documented complete settings checklist or explicit guarantee that Developer’s settings will transfer to stable. Review the preferences that matter to you in the destination, including appearance, privacy, startup behavior, sidebar, and extensions. Recreate or adjust anything missing rather than assuming the profiles are interchangeable.
- Open representative bookmarks and check that folders and Speed Dial entries are present.
- Verify passwords in the destination’s password manager rather than relying on a bookmark check.
- Review the settings you care about and confirm extensions are present and working.
- Keep the source browser profile intact until those checks are complete.
Why not copy the entire profile?
A profile may contain browser data and preferences, but Opera’s reviewed official material does not provide a guaranteed whole-profile Developer-to-stable migration procedure or promise that every setting transfers. A community forum post discusses moving bookmarks to a new computer; it is not proof that copying profiles between channels is safe or complete. If you are an experienced user considering file-level copying, close Opera first and retain a complete backup so you can restore the original. Do not overwrite a profile on the assumption that the channels use compatible files. The community post is available at Opera’s forum.
