If a phone scammer got your personal information, end the call, share nothing else—including verification codes—and contact the affected bank, company, or phone provider through a channel you find yourself. Then take steps based on what the caller obtained: a Social Security number, a password, payment details, control of your number, or access to a device. Sharing information does not prove it has already been misused, but acting promptly can help limit the risk.
This guidance is for people in the United States. If you are elsewhere, contact your local consumer-protection, financial, and credit-reporting authorities; reporting channels and remedies vary by country.
What to do first
- End contact and stop sharing. Do not give the caller another password, one-time login code, identity detail, payment, or remote access to a device. Be wary if someone calls back claiming to be law enforcement, a bank, or a recovery service.
- Verify the story independently. If the caller claimed there was a problem with an account, contact the organization through its official app or website, a statement, or the phone number printed on your bank card. Do not rely on caller ID or a paid search result to identify the caller or find a legitimate number. The FTC warns that caller ID can be spoofed; see its Phone Scams guidance and advice about unexpected calls, texts, and emails.
- Contact the affected provider. Reach the bank, payment service, phone company, or online account provider using a known official channel. Ask it to secure the account and investigate any unauthorized activity. For a payment, ask promptly whether a pending transfer can be stopped or reversed; the options depend on the payment method, and recovery is not guaranteed.
- Report the incident. If you suspect identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery plan. Report a scam or financial loss to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For an unwanted call without financial loss, the FTC also directs consumers to DoNotCall.gov. The FTC’s recovery checklist covers additional steps.
Choose the response based on what the caller got
Social Security number or other identity information
If your Social Security number or other identifying details could be used to open credit, report suspected identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and consider placing a credit freeze, a fraud alert, or both. A freeze restricts access to your credit file for new-credit decisions. You must request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion; it is free and stays in place until you lift it. An initial fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. It is free, lasts one year, and can be placed with one bureau, which must notify the other two. You may need to lift a freeze temporarily when applying for new credit; an alert does not block access to your file.

Username, password, or verification code
If you can still access the account, change the compromised password to a strong, unique one. Change it anywhere else you reused it, then enable two-factor authentication. If you are locked out, use the service’s official account-recovery process and secure the account once you regain access. Never read a one-time login code to an unexpected caller; a code can let someone sign in as you.
Bank, card, or payment information
Contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service, or other provider tied to the information. Use its official app, website, statement, or a number you already trust. Report unauthorized charges or transfers and ask whether a pending payment can be stopped or reversed. What the provider can do depends on how the money was sent, so contact it quickly rather than assuming the payment can be recovered.

Control of your phone number or mobile account
If the scammer took over your number or phone-provider account, contact the provider to regain control and change the password for that account. Then check bank, card, and other financial accounts for unauthorized charges or account changes. A hijacked number can affect access to accounts that use it for verification.
Remote access to your phone or computer
If you let the caller control your device, update its security software and run a scan. Remove any problems the scan identifies, change passwords for accounts you accessed on the device, and enable two-factor authentication. For help, contact the device manufacturer or a company you already know and trust—not a number or link supplied by the caller.

Watch for a follow-up recovery scam
After a loss, another caller may promise to recover your money in exchange for an upfront payment or more personal or financial information. Do not pay an unexpected caller or disclose more information. Contact the original bank or payment provider yourself, and report the follow-up scam to the FTC. The FTC’s refund and recovery scam guidance explains this tactic.
The FTC says it will never threaten you, tell you to transfer money to “protect it,” or tell you to withdraw cash or buy gold and give it to someone. Those are scam tactics, not legitimate ways to secure funds.
