Choose a wireless PC controller by checking three things in order: whether it connects to your PC by Bluetooth or a USB receiver, whether your games and launcher support it, and whether the features you want work over that connection. A controller can pair successfully yet still need game-specific setup—or a USB cable for features such as DualSense haptics.
Start with the connection your PC and controller both support
Wireless PC controllers generally connect through Bluetooth or a dedicated USB receiver. Some also support USB cable connections for wired play or particular features. Availability depends on the specific controller, so check its official PC compatibility and connection instructions before buying.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a direct wireless option if your PC has Bluetooth and the controller supports pairing with PCs. Microsoft documents Bluetooth pairing for Windows, and Sony documents Bluetooth connections for DualSense controllers on supported PC operating systems. Pairing does not ensure every game or feature will work as expected.
Dedicated USB receiver
Some controllers use a USB receiver rather than the PC’s Bluetooth radio. If a receiver is required, check whether it is included or sold separately and whether it supports the exact controller and PC operating system. An accessory such as the 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 supports specified Bluetooth controllers; consult its current compatibility list before purchase. The available product documentation does not establish that receiver-based wireless is generally faster or more reliable than Bluetooth.

USB cable
A USB cable can provide a wired connection and may be necessary for a feature you care about. For example, Sony Interactive Entertainment says DualSense haptic feedback on PC requires a USB connection and a game that supports the feature. Check operating-system, launcher, and game compatibility
Compatibility has more than one layer: the PC must recognize the controller, the launcher may need to configure it, and the game must support the controller or its input mapping. A controller appearing as connected does not guarantee that every game or feature will work as expected.

- Operating system: Check the controller maker’s official PC support page and supported connection modes for your operating system.
- Launcher: Steam documents support for several controller families and offers Steam Input configuration. Its controller support documentation can help you check device support and setup within Steam.
- Game: Confirm support for the specific games you play. A setup that works in Steam may not behave the same way in a game launched outside Steam.
- Features: Verify that each feature you want works with your controller, game, and chosen connection mode; some features have narrower requirements than basic input.
Windows lists Xbox Wireless Controller, PlayStation DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller among its game-input examples. That is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of universal compatibility across Windows games. Steam also lists controller device families, including Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, but game support and configuration can still vary.

Use this checklist before you buy
- Find the controller maker’s official PC support page and confirm the exact model and supported connection modes.
- Check whether your PC has Bluetooth. If the controller needs a receiver or adapter, confirm whether it is included and whether it supports your exact controller and operating system.
- Check support in the games and launcher you actually use. Review Steam Input guidance for Steam games, and verify non-Steam games separately.
- List the specific features you expect, then confirm which work with your game and chosen connection. For DualSense haptics on PC, Sony specifies a supporting game and USB connection.
- If reusing a controller with an adapter, check the adapter maker’s current compatibility list before purchasing.
