Keep the source workbook read-only in your workflow: read or load it, then save the generated report to a different path. Check that the paths do not resolve to the same file, and decide explicitly whether an existing report may be replaced. A separate destination protects the input from your write operation, but it does not guarantee that a workbook library will preserve every Excel feature when it opens and saves a file.
Choose pandas or openpyxl for the job
Use pandas when the report is primarily about reading tabular data, transforming it, and exporting a new workbook. Use openpyxl when you need to edit cells or workbook structure directly. The right choice depends on what must be preserved as well as what needs changing.

For workbooks containing macros, shapes, embedded objects, or other advanced features, test a representative file and inspect the saved result before relying on a load-and-save workflow. The openpyxl warning is a reason for caution, not evidence that every workbook loses every such feature.
Set distinct paths and decide your overwrite policy
Use explicit source and output paths. Create the output directory if needed, then refuse to proceed if the paths resolve to the same file. A conservative script also refuses to write over an existing report unless replacement is intentional.

The example uses pandas to read the Data sheet and write a new report. Its refusal to replace an existing output is a safeguard in the script; the library documentation describes the read and write interfaces, not this overwrite policy. See pandas Excel input and output.
Write a new report with pandas
For a data-centered report, read the needed sheet, perform your transformations, then export the result to the distinct output path. Use to_excel for a straightforward export. Use an ExcelWriter context manager when the report needs multiple sheets; pandas documents both interfaces and its writer engines in its Excel files guide.

Exporting a DataFrame creates a workbook report from the data you provide; it is not the same as editing the original workbook while retaining all of its workbook-level features. If the output must preserve a complex existing layout or objects, verify the result against the actual file rather than assuming a tabular export will carry them across.
Edit an existing workbook with openpyxl
When changes depend on the existing workbook’s cells or structure, load it with openpyxl and save it to the new output path—not the source path. The project tutorial explains loading and saving workbooks and warns: “openpyxl does currently not read all possible items in an Excel file so shapes will be lost from existing files if they are opened and saved with the same name.” Treat that as a documented limitation to check against your workbook, not a claim that all formatting or every shape will always be lost.

Before adopting this workflow for a feature-rich workbook, try it on a representative copy and inspect the features the report needs to retain. Confirm behavior for formulas or cached values against the specific library and version you use; formula recalculation behavior is not established here.
Make copying or replacement deliberate
Copying a workbook to a working or output location can be useful, but the destination still needs an overwrite policy. Python documents that shutil.copyfile replaces an existing destination and copies file contents only. shutil.copy2 attempts to preserve metadata, but cannot preserve every kind of metadata on every platform. If you write to a temporary file and then promote it to the final report name, use os.replace only when you intend to replace that output. Python documents that it replaces an existing file destination when permitted; it may fail across filesystems. On POSIX, the replacement is atomic on success. Those guarantees do not make it safe to use the source path as the destination. See Python’s os.replace documentation.
Validate the saved report
A successful save does not prove the result contains the right data or retained features. Reopen or independently inspect the output and check the items your workflow depends on:

- Expected sheet names and structure.
- Row counts and key totals after transformation.
- Required formulas, formatting, shapes, or embedded objects.
- That the source workbook remains unchanged, if preserving it is a requirement of your process.
These checks are safeguards to build into your workflow; they are not guarantees supplied by pandas or openpyxl. Run them on representative files before automating recurring reports.
