Neither tool can be named the universal context saver from the available documentation. Cursor publishes a typical context-window capacity of 200,000 tokens and describes how its chats gather and condense code. Claude Code documents session growth and offers compaction controls. Those details explain capacity and context management—not how many input tokens either tool uses on the same coding task.

What “uses less context” can mean

Context is not one interchangeable number. A comparison might refer to the maximum context a model can hold, the input tokens sent for a task, how much irrelevant code is included, how much earlier conversation and tool output is carried into later calls, or how often a session must be compacted. A tool can have a larger available window without filling more of it—or using fewer tokens to complete a task.

The official documentation reviewed does not publish a shared metric ranking Claude Code and Cursor across these measures. In particular, it does not provide a controlled, same-model, same-repository comparison of actual input tokens.

What Cursor documents

Window capacity is not task consumption

Cursor says its normal context window is 200,000 tokens. Its Max Mode can extend the window to the maximum available for eligible models; availability varies by model, and Cursor notes that Max Mode may be slower and more expensive. The 200,000-token figure describes capacity, not tokens consumed by a typical coding task. Cursor: Context

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Chats gather and accumulate context

Cursor says each chat has its own context window, and prompts, attached files, and responses add to context used in that chat. It also says it automatically gathers likely relevant codebase context and condenses large files or folders to fit. Developers can guide selection by referring to particular files or symbols. These behaviors describe how context is assembled and managed, but do not quantify the input tokens sent for a given task. Cursor: Codebase context Cursor: Files and folders

What Claude Code documents

Session controls manage a growing context

Claude Code’s support guidance describes context accumulating as a session progresses. The /compact command summarizes the conversation to free space while retaining a recap. /clear starts a fresh conversation while leaving project files available. Claude Code also automatically compacts near the context limit. These are context-management mechanisms, not evidence of lower token use than Cursor. Anthropic: Managing context on Claude Code

What a fair comparison would measure

A credible answer needs matched runs, rather than a comparison of window limits or feature descriptions. Use the same repository, task prompt, underlying model and model version where both products support them, and comparable permissions and tools. Record input tokens for every model call, including repeated history, file contents, tool results, and summaries where available. Track output tokens separately.

Test more than one kind of work: a single-file edit, a multi-file change, and a repository-level investigation. Report each product’s version, model, mode, test date, and whether automatic context gathering or Max Mode was enabled. If one product does not expose practical token accounting, report a proxy such as context-meter readings or compaction frequency as a proxy—not as a direct token comparison.

How to choose without a matched token test

  • Compare like with like. Keep model and model version consistent where possible; model choice can affect available context and the result.
  • Separate capacity from usage. A larger window means more can fit at once, not that a task consumes more tokens or that the tool is more efficient.
  • Watch what enters the conversation. File selection, attachments, repository retrieval, and carried-over conversation or tool results can all affect input context.
  • Distinguish compaction from savings. Compaction can make room by summarizing earlier context, but the existence of that feature does not establish lower total input-token use.
  • Keep cost and latency separate. Cursor warns that Max Mode may be slower and more expensive, but that does not establish its cost relative to a matched Claude Code run.
