Apple Upgrade is a lease; Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program is a 0% APR loan; and carrier installment plans follow each carrier’s own payoff and upgrade rules. The right comparison is not just the monthly phone payment: include required coverage, service-plan cost, trade-in treatment, promotional credits, exit charges, and whether you will own the phone.

This comparison covers U.S. program terms available in October 2026. Apple and carrier terms, eligible plans, and promotions can change, so confirm the terms for your device and account before enrolling.

What is the difference between Apple Upgrade and Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program?

The names are similar, but the financial arrangements are not. Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program is a loan that can lead to a new loan when you upgrade. Apple Upgrade is a lease: you generally return the device or pay a purchase fee to own it at the end.

Option What you pay for the phone Coverage and enrollment What happens when you upgrade or finish
Apple iPhone Upgrade Program A 24-month loan at 0% APR for the full retail price of an eligible iPhone, under Apple’s U.S. terms retrieved in 2026. Taxes, fees, and AppleCare+ are additional considerations. Credit check, continuous AppleCare+, and activation on an eligible carrier plan are required. The carrier may charge an activation fee. To use the Upgrade Option, meet the payment and account requirements and return the financed phone in qualifying condition. A new enrollment and credit check apply to the next loan. After the new loan’s first payment, Apple pays the old loan’s remaining balance to the bank.
Apple Upgrade Monthly lease payments. Apple’s product page says the lease payments have no associated fees; this does not remove possible taxes, damage charges, or early-exit obligations. For an iPhone lease, select AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon at enrollment; prepaid service is not allowed. Apple describes leased iPhones as unlocked. You do not own the phone at lease end unless you pay the purchase fee. Early upgrade requires a new lease and return of the old device. Early termination can require remaining lease payments plus applicable taxes.
Carrier installment plan Device payments under that carrier’s agreement, potentially alongside a separate promotional-credit schedule. Carrier-specific. Plan eligibility, account standing, return requirements, and any optional upgrade feature vary. Upgrade timing, payoff, credits, and the balance due when leaving depend on the carrier agreement and promotion. Carrier installment phones described by Apple are locked until paid in full.

The iPhone Upgrade Program’s loan is for the iPhone’s full retail price; AppleCare+ is required but is not a reason to treat the phone loan as a bundled, all-inclusive monthly price. Likewise, Apple’s statement that a leased iPhone is unlocked does not cancel the lease or its payment obligations.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

How do the carrier upgrade rules compare?

A carrier installment plan does not automatically include an early-upgrade option. The thresholds below describe the carrier terms retrieved in 2026, not a guarantee that a specific phone, account, or promotion qualifies.

Carrier option Upgrade threshold in the terms retrieved in 2026 Key cost or trade-in consequence
AT&T Next Up Anytime AT&T describes 36 monthly installment payments; its optional Next Up Anytime feature may allow an upgrade after one installment payment, subject to conditions, including being outside the Buyer’s Remorse period. The feature was listed at an additional $10 per month. A trade-in is not required unless a promotion requires one.
Verizon Early Upgrade Program After 30 days, an eligible customer may upgrade after paying at least 50% of the device’s retail price and returning the eligible old device in good working condition. If the early-upgrade conditions are not met, the customer remains responsible for the original agreement balance.
T-Mobile Yearly Upgrade Requires at least six months on the installment plan and payment of 50% of the device cost, plus a qualifying plan, good-standing account, and a device in good working order. T-Mobile says it pays the qualifying remaining finance balance, but upgrading ends existing financing and device-promotion or deposit-reimbursement credits. The trade-in satisfies the early-upgrade requirement; it is not valued separately.

T-Mobile’s listed consumer qualifying plans included Go5G Next and Experience Beyond in the support terms retrieved in 2026; qualifying business plan names are also listed by T-Mobile. Check the current eligible-plan list rather than assuming another plan qualifies. AT&T’s feature name and price, Verizon’s eligibility, and all carriers’ plan and promotion terms can also change.

How do fees and the total cost differ?

There is no reliable universal “cheapest” choice without the actual phone, service plan, trade-in, coverage, promotion, and upgrade date. Compare the cost over the same period, and separate recurring service charges from device costs.

  • Device payments or lease payments: Record the required down payment, each scheduled payment, the payoff or purchase amount, and any balance due at your planned exit date.
  • Required coverage and add-ons: Include AppleCare+ for the iPhone Upgrade Program. For carrier options, include any required or optional upgrade feature, such as AT&T Next Up Anytime if you choose it.
  • Service plan: Compare the cost of the eligible carrier plan for the same number of months. A qualifying plan can be a material condition of an upgrade program, not just a separate phone bill.
  • Taxes and fees: Check when taxes are due and whether activation, service, or other charges apply. Apple says the iPhone Upgrade Program’s carrier may charge an additional fee; the specific amount is not stated in the program facts here.
  • Trade-in and bill credits: Note the trade-in value, qualification rules, and when credits are applied. Do not count a promotional credit as an upfront discount if it arrives over time or depends on keeping a plan or account eligible.
  • Exit cost: Include remaining loan installments or lease payments, applicable taxes, lost promotional credits, and any damage or non-return charge.

Do not treat Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Option as making the old phone free. You have paid installments, must satisfy the return and account conditions, and start a new loan if you enroll again. Similarly, an early-upgrade payoff from a carrier does not necessarily preserve credits from a separate promotion.

How are trade-ins handled?

“Trade-in” can mean returning a phone to satisfy an upgrade condition, receiving a payoff, or earning a separate promotional credit. Those are different transactions, even when the same device is involved.

Apple iPhone Upgrade Program

To use the Upgrade Option, return the financed phone in the required physical and operational condition. Apple’s U.S. terms retrieved in 2026 require the equivalent of 12 installments, good standing, and continuously maintained AppleCare+. After six regularly scheduled payments, members may accelerate enough payments to reach the 12-installment equivalent. Apple can reject a device that fails its condition criteria; the terms describe a process involving applicable AppleCare+ service rights and fees. If the upgrade succeeds and the first payment on the new loan is made, Apple pays the remaining old-loan balance to the bank.

  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

You can trade in the financed phone outside the program, but that does not erase your loan responsibility. The old loan must still be handled under its terms. Apple’s terms also say program upgrades cannot be combined with other offers unless those offer terms specifically allow it.

Apple Upgrade lease

An early lease upgrade requires a new lease and return of the current device. Apple says a device not returned, upgraded, or purchased by lease end can convert to a month-to-month lease for up to six months under the announcement terms. Return condition can matter: Apple identifies possible damage fees for a device not returned in good condition. Check the lease agreement for the selected product and checkout terms for the exact return and purchase obligations.

Carrier plans and promotions

Under T-Mobile Yearly Upgrade, the trade-in satisfies the early-upgrade requirement and is not separately valued. That is distinct from a trade-in promotion, which may have separate eligibility rules and a schedule of bill credits. T-Mobile says Yearly Upgrade ends existing device-promotion or deposit-reimbursement credits. For any carrier, verify whether upgrading, paying off early, changing plans, or switching carriers ends remaining credits before you count them as savings.

  • If you want a predictable annual-style upgrade path: Compare the relevant upgrade threshold and required plan. Apple’s standard Upgrade Option requires the 12-installment equivalent; AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile each use different rules, and early access may involve a feature, payoff threshold, or qualifying plan.
  • If you want to own the phone: A loan or carrier installment plan can lead to ownership after payoff, subject to its terms. Apple Upgrade is a lease; ownership at the end requires paying the purchase fee.
  • If you may switch carriers: Check the device lock and exit economics. Apple describes Apple Upgrade leased iPhones as unlocked, but the lease remains binding. Apple says phones financed through its carrier-installment option are locked until paid in full; a carrier agreement or unpaid promotional credits can also affect the cost of switching.
  • If your phone may be damaged: Read the return-condition rules and determine what coverage or service charges apply. Both Apple’s program options and carrier early-upgrade paths can depend on returning a device in acceptable condition.

What should you check before enrolling?

  1. Choose the exact transaction. Confirm whether the offer is Apple Upgrade lease, Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program loan, a carrier installment plan, or a separate trade-in promotion.
  2. Confirm eligibility. Check the exact model, carrier, service plan, credit requirements, account standing, and minimum payment or time threshold shown in current terms.
  3. Ask for the full payment schedule. Include device or lease payments, required protection, optional add-ons, service cost, down payment, taxes, and fees.
  4. Trace every trade-in dollar. Establish whether the old device is merely being returned, whether a remaining balance is paid, or whether a promotion provides credits over time.
  5. Model your likely exit. Check the amount due if you leave early, whether remaining credits end, what happens if the device is damaged or not returned, and whether you can buy a leased phone.
  6. Save the terms for your offer. Keep the checkout summary and promotion details, since carrier plan names, upgrade features, and credit conditions can change.
