Neither option is always cheaper. At Apple’s US prices checked October 4, 2026, an iPhone 17 256GB costs $929 to buy outright, while Apple Upgrade starts at $25.99 per month for 24 months. Those lease payments total $623.76 before taxes and other costs, but you return the phone without owning it. Buying outright costs less over two years if you can later recover more than $305.24 through resale or trade-in; that recovery is not guaranteed.
How the two-year iPhone 17 comparison works
Apple’s US store lists the iPhone 17 256GB at $929 when you choose “Connect on your own later.” Apple Upgrade’s listed starting rate for iPhone 17 is $25.99 per month for 24 months. Prices and actual lease payments can vary by configuration and checkout terms.
| Option | Listed amount | What you have after 24 months |
|---|---|---|
| Buy iPhone 17 256GB outright | $929, before tax | You own the phone and can keep, sell, or trade it in. |
| Apple Upgrade, 24-month starting rate | $25.99 monthly; $623.76 across 24 payments | If returned, you have paid to use the phone but do not own it. |
The $623.76 is a calculation from Apple’s listed starting monthly rate, not a published total for every configuration. It excludes tax, trade-in effects, separately purchased coverage, and any potential fees. Subtracting it from the $929 purchase price gives a $305.24 break-even recovery: under this simplified comparison, the outright buyer’s net device cost is lower if resale or trade-in brings in more than $305.24 after two years. This is arithmetic, not a forecast of the phone’s future value.
For another model example, Apple’s July 28, 2026 launch announcement listed the iPhone 17 Pro 256GB at $1,099 to purchase and a typical 24-month lease payment of $31.99 per month; both figures exclude taxes and trade-in credit. See Apple’s launch announcement.

What Apple Upgrade includes—and what it does not
It is a lease, not an installment purchase
Apple Upgrade is a consumer lease provided by Klarna. Apple currently lists 12- and 24-month iPhone lease terms, subject to application approval. Apple says iPhone leasing requires connecting to AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. The monthly amount depends on the model, term, and checkout terms. See Apple Upgrade’s current US terms.
End-of-term choices
At the end of the lease, Apple says you can upgrade and return the phone, leave the program and return it, or buy it. The purchase amount is the original list price at lease signing minus payments made and remaining trade-in credits, plus applicable taxes. Returning the phone at term end carries no additional lease termination amount if it is in good working condition; damage fees can apply otherwise. If you exit early, you must pay the remaining lease payments plus applicable taxes. See Apple’s lease details.

Coverage is separate
AppleCare is not included in Apple Upgrade. If you select it, it is billed separately, so compare equivalent coverage costs if you want protection on either path. The former US iPhone Upgrade Program was a different product: a 24-month installment loan that included AppleCare+. Apple said in July 2026 that it would no longer offer that former program or iPhone Payments in the US. Do not treat those old loan terms as benefits of the current lease. See the former program’s terms and current Apple Upgrade information.
What outright ownership changes
Buying outright means paying the listed purchase price and owning the phone. You can keep using it, sell it, or trade it in. Apple says trade-in estimates depend on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition, and the final amount depends on whether the returned phone matches the described condition. A future resale price or trade-in offer cannot be inferred from the current purchase and lease prices. Check Apple’s trade-in information for an estimate when you are ready to trade.

How to compare your actual checkout costs
- Match the device. Select the same model and storage for both options, then compare actual checkout totals rather than a “from” lease rate with a different purchase configuration.
- Set the time horizon. Compare the period you expect to use the phone: 12 months, a 24-month lease, or longer ownership. A longer period can change the economics, especially if you keep a purchased phone after paying for it.
- Calculate the lease path. Add the payments due over your chosen term and include taxes, any initial trade-in credit, the coverage you choose, and the return condition. Apple says a trade-in credit used with Apple Upgrade applies to the initial lease term and cannot be used again when upgrading; see Apple’s trade-in terms.
- Estimate ownership recovery conservatively. For an outright purchase, subtract only a realistic resale or trade-in amount for that exact model, storage, and condition. Do not assume a future value that has not been offered or verified.
- Check carrier and promotion rules. iPhone leasing under Apple Upgrade requires an eligible major-carrier connection. Apple’s “Connect on your own later” purchase option is a different path. Carrier promotions may also change checkout costs, so compare the offers available to you at the time of purchase.
Who may prefer each option
Apple Upgrade may fit frequent upgraders
A lease can suit someone who wants to use an iPhone for a set term and return it when upgrading, rather than managing a sale or trade-in. That convenience comes with lease conditions, no automatic ownership, and separate coverage costs if AppleCare is wanted.
Buying outright may fit longer-term owners
Paying upfront can make more sense if you plan to keep the phone beyond the comparison period or expect a meaningful resale or trade-in recovery. Ownership also leaves you free to choose when and where to sell or trade, though the amount recovered depends on future demand and condition.

Two details that can shift the comparison
Trade-in credits affect timing
A trade-in can reduce the amount due at the start, but Apple says a credit used with Apple Upgrade applies to the initial lease term and cannot be reused when upgrading. For a fair comparison, account for the credit once rather than treating it as a recurring discount.
Apple Card Daily Cash is conditional
Apple reported a 3 percent Daily Cash benefit for customers who make Apple Upgrade lease payments with Apple Card. It is a payment-specific benefit, not a general discount available to every lessee or outright buyer. Details are in Apple’s July 2026 announcement.
