Choose the smart home ecosystem that supports the exact devices you own and plan to buy—not the one with the longest feature list. Google Home and Amazon Alexa both support Matter, which can let a compatible device appear in multiple certified apps. But Matter does not guarantee that every device category or feature works identically in both. Check the product’s exact model and current compatibility before you commit.

Start with your devices, not the ecosystem

Write down the brand and exact model number of each device you already use, plus the devices you plan to add. Then check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information for both Google Home and Alexa. A product may work with one platform through a manufacturer integration, while another model in the same product line may not.

Google says existing Works with Google Home devices remain supported and advises shoppers to look for either the Works with Google Home or Matter badge. Amazon’s developer documentation lists Matter-supported categories, but it is not a complete consumer catalog of every Alexa-compatible product. For either platform, the model-specific listing is more useful than a broad claim that a brand or product category is supported. Google’s Works with Google Home information and the manufacturer’s own compatibility page are good places to check.

What Matter changes—and what it does not

Matter is a connectivity standard intended to make compatible smart-home devices usable across participating platforms. Google says Matter devices can be controlled simultaneously in multiple Matter-certified apps, including Google Home and Amazon Alexa. That makes a mixed setup possible: you may be able to keep devices available in more than one app instead of choosing a single ecosystem for everything.

A Matter badge is not a promise that every feature will appear in every app. Google and Amazon document different supported categories, and platforms can add device types and capabilities at different times. Check that the exact device, category, and functions you care about are supported in each app you intend to use. Google’s Matter setup and compatibility guidance explains its approach to multi-app control.

Compare the Matter categories each platform documents

Google’s compatibility and help pages describe Matter support across lighting and electrical devices, HVAC and climate, safety and security, window coverings, media, sensors, and controllers or bridges. Its help material also discusses categories associated with Matter 1.2, such as refrigerators, room air conditioners, dishwashers, robot vacuums with mopping, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, air-quality sensors, fans, air purifiers, and garage door openers. Consult Google’s detailed documentation for the current status of a particular device and feature.

Amazon’s developer documentation lists Matter hubs, lighting and smart plugs, generic buttons, sensors, door locks and window coverings, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, room air conditioners, dishwashers, and robotic vacuums among Alexa-supported categories. It maps device-specific Matter clusters to Alexa interfaces, so it is useful for understanding category-level capability, but it does not establish compatibility for every retail product.

Amazon’s developer changelog reported in May 2026 that Matter-enabled Echo devices support Matter 1.5 and that Alexa supports over-the-air software updates for Matter products. This is a dated developer update, not evidence that every Echo model supports every device type or feature. Check the documentation for the specific Echo and product combination.

Check the hub, network, and connection type

Google Home hub requirements

Google says a compatible Matter-enabled hub is needed to add Matter devices to Google Home and control them locally or remotely. Its listed options include Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, and Nest Wifi Pro. Several other Nest speakers and displays support Matter over Wi-Fi only. Verify current support for the exact hub model before buying; you may already own suitable hardware.

Thread devices need a Thread border router

Some Matter devices use Thread rather than Wi-Fi. Google’s setup documentation requires a Thread border router for Thread devices. Google lists Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, and Nest Wifi Pro among its hubs that support Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Confirm that your intended hub supports the particular connection type your device uses.

Google’s stated setup prerequisites

Google’s setup guide lists IPv6 enabled on the home Wi-Fi network, a compatible hub, Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher for pairing, and the latest Google Home app. It specifies Android 8.1 or later with Google Play services 22.48.14 or later, or iOS 16.5 or later. These are Google’s published requirements and may change; check its current setup instructions when you install a device.

Use this checklist before choosing

  1. Identify exact models. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information for every device you own or plan to buy.
  2. Confirm the required functions. Verify that Google Home or Alexa supports the device category and the features you actually intend to use; do not rely on the Matter badge alone.
  3. Check the connection. Find out whether the device uses Wi-Fi or Thread. For Google Home, confirm the appropriate hub is available and that Thread devices have a Thread border router.
  4. Check setup requirements. For Google Home Matter devices, verify IPv6, the required phone or tablet, Bluetooth pairing support, and the latest app version against Google’s current guidance.
  5. Decide how many apps you want. If you want the device in both ecosystems, confirm that it supports Matter multi-admin use and that both apps support its category and desired features.

Can you add a device to more than one app?

Google’s documentation says Matter-enabled devices can be controlled simultaneously in multiple Matter-certified smart-home apps. Its setup help also describes sharing a device from a manufacturer’s app with Google Home; depending on the product, you may scan its Matter QR code or use the app’s add flow. Follow the manufacturer’s and platform’s current instructions, since the sharing path can vary by device.

If the devices you rely on are supported by both platforms, keeping Google Home and Alexa in the same home can be a practical option. It does not remove the need to check each product’s app support or setup requirements.

Which ecosystem should you choose?

  • Lean toward Google Home if your existing devices are confirmed compatible with it and you already have a suitable Google Matter hub, especially if your planned devices use Thread and your hub also supports Thread.
  • Lean toward Alexa if your exact devices and desired features are confirmed to work with Alexa and its supported setup fits your home.
  • Consider both if cross-platform Matter control matters to you and each device’s category and features are supported in both apps.

There is no universal winner established by device compatibility alone. Neither a platform’s category list nor a Matter label can settle the decision without checking your actual models, required functions, and hub or network needs.
